Michael Douglas speaks up for son

By Alexandra Heilbron on April 20, 2010 | 8 Comments

michael_douglasIf you wondered why Cameron Douglas‘ stepmother (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and his grandfather (Kirk Douglas) asked a judge for leniancy, but his father, Michael Douglas, was silent, well, Michael has finally come forward to show his support.  The Oscar-winning actor penned a heartfelt letter to Judge Richard Berman in a bid for him to show mercy on 31-year-old Cameron, who is to be sentenced for drug dealing and possession today. Michael wrote: “I have some idea of the pressure of finding your own identity with a famous father. I’m not sure I can comprehend it with two generations to deal with.” He also blames some of Cameron’s actions on his family background. He said: “He is an adult and responsible for his own actions. We do know, however, that genes, family and peer pressure are a strong influence on a substance abuser.” In the handwritten five-page letter, Michael, 65, notes many members of the Douglas family have struggled with addiction. He says Cameron grew up a single child in a “bad marriage” and his acting career often took him away from home but Cameron is now completely “sober.”  Cameron faces up to 10 years in jail.

I imagine that growing up with an absentee famous father would be incredibly damaging. Almost as bad as being a child star.

Bull Crap. There are milllions of kids brought up in dysfunctional environments, they all don’t turn to drugs and dealing. What makes him so special because he comes from an entertainment family, these people aren’t above the law. Do the Crime, do the time. How many lives did he destroy and how many of them were kids. I’m not above feeling pity for this man and the word here is MAN,not child he should have asked for help his family was there for him. If he hadn’t got caught he’d probably still be peddling drugs.Maybe time in jail will rehabilitate him.

So because he grew up with an absentee famous father, a famous grandfather, a family history of addictions, his own illegal actions should be forgiven? I think not, give him what he has earned.

Just read he’s been sentenced to 5 years. There’s ‘addiction’, then there’s ‘conspiring to distribute large amounts of illicit drugs’ which carries a max of 10 yrs. Michael Douglas’ cop-out plea is a joke.

This is seriously making me want to vomit. I read the little part of Kirk and Catherine’s letter that was posted here a while back and I was disgusted. They’re showing exactly what many accuse these famous, too-into-themselves-and-their-own-little-world people…that they’re special. Well you’re not! I love films obviously, or I wouldn’t be on this site but this is sick. TO actually write a letter to the judge asking him to pardon his criminal son AND they ACTUALLY BRING UP their career. It just makes them look like they’re implicitly exert their influence. So what if you’re a movie star? Such audacity. This is…I don;t even have a word for it. I hope their future movies BLOW!

I mean seriously, if you were gonna go to the judge and plead with him – it should have been man to man, father to father but to bring up your career. I understand it had a significant effect on your son growing up but its not the fame really, it was you leaving, being absent. I;m sure he could’ve handled your fame – the attention, the photographers, the parties etc – if you had been a better father. this is YOUR punishment Michael Douglas…as well as his. But I blame him more coz I understand the feeling of being somewhat of a failure in a parent’s eyes or not being to live up to their expectations…

    whatever.

ps; I meant I blame Michael Douglas more than his son.
