New movies in theaters – Countdown, Western Stars and more

No less than seven fantastic new movies are hitting theaters this weekend — if you find it difficult to choose which one to watch first, check below for a description of each one, plus a trailer link so you can see what it’s about for yourself! We also have a review for Jojo Rabbit (link below), which won the People’s Choice award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival — that means it will very likely be nominated for Best Picture at next year’s Academy Awards. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Countdown – When an app that tells people how many years they have left to live becomes popular, a young nurse named Quinn (Elizabeth Lail) downloads it for fun. When it tells her she has only two days before her life ends, she decides it’s fake, but then learns people are actually dying on the day the app predicted. Quinn tries to get rid of the app, but it proves to be impossible. The Lighthouse – Aging lighthouse keeper Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and his young assistant Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) arrive on a remote New England island in the 1890s. Thomas, who says his last assistant went crazy, treats Ephraim like a slave. Ephraim takes the verbal abuse with as much calm as he can muster, and performs all the physically demanding tasks, while Thomas does nothing but tend to the lantern. However, Thomas’s refusal to allow Ephraim access to the top of the lighthouse causes tension between the two men. Click here for showtimes.

Western Stars – Legendary musician Bruce Springsteen performs his critically acclaimed latest album Western Stars live at his 100-year-old barn on his Colts Neck property in New Jersey with a 30-piece orchestra for a small private audience. Click here for showtimes.

Black and Blue – A rookie African-American female cop (Naomie Harris) happens across corrupt officers who are murdering a drug dealer. With the incident captured on her body cam, the bad cops chase her through the night in an attempt to silence her and destroy the incriminating footage. Click here for showtimes.

Jojo Rabbit – During WWII, Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis), a 10-year-old boy, lives in Germany with his mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson). He finds solace in his imaginary friend – a very goofy Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi). But when he finds a Jewish girl hiding in their home, he has to confront his blind patriotism. Click here to read our review. Opens today in Toronto. Jesus is King – Filmed in the summer of 2019, this movie brings Kanye West’s famed Sunday Service to life in the Roden Crater, visionary artist James Turrell’s never-before-seen installation in Arizona’s Painted Desert. Pain and Glory – A retired movie director (Antonio Banderas) who endures chronic physical pain looks back at his life and work. Playing in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Opens Nov. 1 in Vancouver, then expands Nov. 8. Click here for showtimes.
