Independence Day Resurgence PosterAfter Finding Dory‘s recording-breaking debut last weekend, it’s going to take one heck of a blockbuster to dethrone the animated sequel. Will Independence Day: Resurgence, the apocalyptic sequel 20 years in the making, be up to the task? Check back on Sunday and we’ll have the answer.

In the meantime, you can also check out the historic biopic Free State of Jones, the seaside thriller The Shallows, the horror flick The Neon Demon, or the techno-thriller Cell if you’re not in the mood for sequels about talking underwater creatures or deadly alien forces.

Independence Day: Resurgence: Using recovered alien technology after the last invasion in 1996, the nations of Earth have collaborated on a defense program called Earth Space Defense (ESD), which serves as the Earth’s early warning system using technology salvaged from the remains of the alien forces. Former President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) is still involved with the ESD, especially now that his daughter Patricia (Maika Monroe) is dating pilot Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth). But nothing can prepare them for the aliens’ next attack — and only the ingenuity of ESD director David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), Jake and a few other brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. Independence Day: Resurgence opens nationwide today. Click here for showtimes.

Free State of Jones: In theaters across Canada today, Free State of Jones follows a Mississippi blacksmith named Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) who’s working as a nurse during the American Civil War when his terrified young nephew Daniel (Jacob Lofland) suddenly shows up with shocking news — he’s been drafted. Newt joins Daniel in battle for the sole purpose of keeping him out of harm’s way, but his attempts prove futile when Daniel is killed. Disillusioned, Newt deserts and inspires several fellow soldiers, as well as runaway slaves, to join him in his anti-Confederate rebellion. The uprising eventually leads Jones County, Mississippi to break free from the shackles of Confederacy and establishes Newton as a fervent and caring leader. During his epic fight, the defiant Newt falls in love with a slave named Rachel (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). Click here for showtimes.

The Shallows: Medical student Nancy (Blake Lively) travels to a vacation spot where she can get in plenty of surfing. After calling home to say she’s arrived safely, she heads out on her board. She’s suddenly grabbed by a great white shark and pulled underwater. Although she’s bleeding from a number of wounds, she manages to get away to safety on a large rock 200 yards from shore. She tries to warn the other surfers that there’s a shark, but it’s too late. Now all alone, she has to figure out how to get back to land in one piece as the shark circles the rock in the thriller The Shallows, out everywhere today. Click here for showtimes.

She meets Ruby (Jena Malone), a make-up artist who helps open doors for Jesse and introduces her to people in Los Angeles. The two become fast friends, but unbeknownst to Jesse, Ruby has ulterior motives. Click here for showtimes.

It’s all about Neon Demon! ID:R can launch itself into outer space – I couldn’t care less about it.
