New movies in theaters – Sharkwater, Get Out and more

In honor of late filmmaker and eco-warrior Rob Stewart, select Cineplex and Landmark theaters across Canada will be screening his award-winning documentary, Sharkwater, on Saturday, February 25.

Admission is free of charge at the box office, in exchange for a donation to WWF-Canada. All funds raised will go directly to supporting the continuation of Rob’s important environmental conservation work.

Sharkwater – A Tribute to Rob Stewart – Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Rob Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world’s shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Get Out – A young man named Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) is preparing to meet his girlfriend Rose’s (Allison Williams) parents for the first time. However, he is skeptical of the introduction because Rose, who’s white, hasn’t told her parents that he is black. When they arrive at the vast estate, Rose’s parents (Catherine Keener and Bradley Whitford) do not hide their discomfort at their daughter’s choice of suitor. As the awkward visit drags on, Chris begins to notice that all the African Americans in the town are acting strangely — almost as if they’re hypnotized — and soon uncovers a twisted plot. The Girl with All the Gifts – In a dystopian future, most of humanity has been infected by what is referred to as the “zombie fungus.” The few remaining survivors are attempting to find a cure by studying a small group of infected children. The study requires the scientists to kill most of the test subjects, something that a teacher named Helen (Gemma Arterton) finds appalling. When one child, Melanie (Sennia Nanua), is selected for dissection by head scientist Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close), Helen chooses to risk everything to save her. I Am Not Your Negro – Director Raoul Peck takes a look at Remember This House, the book James Baldwin never finished. He crafts a radical narration about race in America, using Baldwin’s original words. He analyzes the country’s obsession with skin color and examines what it means to be Black in the U.S.A. by mixing rich archival footage of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements with recent recordings of young African-American men who’ve been killed, including Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Mike Brown. A United Kingdom – In London in 1947, a white London office worker named Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) meets a young black man (David Oyelowo) and finds out he is Prince Seretse Khama from Botswana who is soon to be King, having lost his father. When Seretse proposes marriage to her, Ruth’s father disowns her. Nonetheless, they are married, but they have no idea what an outcry their union has caused. The English and South African governments set up a ruse to get Seretse and Ruth to return to England, where they plan to separate the two. Opening in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal today.
