New movies in theaters – The Equalizer 2 and more

Denzel Washington is back on the big screen! He returns as Robert McCall in The Equalizer 2, a sequel to the enormously popular first Equalizer movie. Also available in theaters today is the musical sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which explores Donna’s roots before Sophie was born. If horror is more your thing, check out Unfriended: Dark Web, in which a man who took a laptop out of the lost and found is cyber-threatened by the very dangerous owner of the computer. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – When Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) discovers she’s pregnant, she feels terrified at the thought of raising a child. Her mother’s friends and her three fathers remind her that her own mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), was faced with the same  situation 30 years before when she was expecting Sophie. They tell her the story of a young Donna (Lily James) during a fateful summer in Greece, filled with love, heartbreak, and lots of music. Click here for showtimes.

Unfriended: Dark Web – A group of 20-somethings connect once a week via Skype to play a round of Cards Against Humanity. One of the group, Matias, is a programmer who has taken a laptop from a lost and found because he needs it to help him build ASL translation software to communicate with his deaf girlfriend. However, Matias discovers a hidden folder full of violent films of women being murdered through slow and gruesome torture. When the owner of the stolen laptop breaks into the weekly Skype session, he threatens Matias and all his friends. Click here for showtimes.

Broken Star – Actress Markey Marlowe (Analeigh Tipton) is on house arrest after she commits a number of misdemeanors. Realizing that her existence relies on being famous, she becomes depressed and begins using prescription drugs for kicks. Her only contact is her landlord Daryl (Tyler Labine), who obviously has a crush on her, and she craves the attention that she gets from him. Markey comes up with a way to exploit Daryl’s feelings to achieve everlasting fame. Opening in select cities. Click here for showtimes.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot – Alcoholic John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) gets into a car driven by a man who is also drunk. When the car crashes, John survives, but is left a quadriplegic. As he struggles to give up drinking, his support system includes his girlfriend (Rooney Mara) and his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor (Jonah Hill). John becomes a cartoonist after extensive therapy allows him to hold a pen. He discovers he has surprising talent, drawing macabre illustrations of everyday life. Eighth Grade – Kayla (Elsie Fisher) is looking foward to high school, because even though she has an online blog in which she tries to help other kids navigate the social ins and outs of eighth grade, she’s incredibly awkward herself. While trying to bond with other girls, Kayla finds their attention is so far into their cell phones that they don’t even hear her. Instead of bonding with her father (Josh Hamilton), she ignores him while keeping busy on Instagram. Kayla feels alone, but when she gets a high school girl as a mentor, things begin to change.
