New movies in theaters – The Jungle Book, Criminal and more!

There are a variety of movies opening in theaters today – whether you want family friendly fare, comedy, drama or a choice of several different thrillers, there’s something for you this week if you’d like to get out of the house and make a trip to your local theater for some good times with friends or family, or even by yourself if you’re a crazy movie buff like we are here at Tribute!

There are three wide releases and several limited releases, which means if you’re in any one of a number of cities, you may have the chance to see one of these films, including two thrillers starring the beautiful and talented Emma Watson.

Opening in theaters all across Canada in 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX, is The Jungle Book. Now a live action adventure, it stars newcomer Neel Sethi as the adventuresome Mowgli, who was raised by wolves in the jungle. When a tiger threatens him, his wise panther friend Bagheera decides it’s time for Mowgli to go to the man village, where he can live with his kind. Along the way, Mowgli meets Baloo the bear (voiced by Bill Murray), is kidnapped by apes and entranced by a snake (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Barbershop: The Next Cut brings back Calvin (Ice Cube) and his barbershop crew, which has gone co-ed by employing new stylists such as Draya (Nicki Minaj). But when their neighborhood takes a turn for the worse with gunfire being exchanged right outside on the street, they decide to turn the shop into a safe place by offering free services in an effort to stop the violence. This comedy opens across Canada today. Click here for showtimes.

Also opening in theaters across Canada, Criminal is about sociopathic convict Jericho Stewart (Kevin Costner). When a CIA agent, Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds), is killed before he can tell the agency where he took an important programmer for protection, the CIA implants his memories and skills into Jericho’s brain in order to retrieve that information. Unfortunately, Jericho tells them he doesn’t remember and with the intel lodged in his skull, the convict becomes the target of a terrorist organization. Click here for showtimes.

Open in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, Miles Ahead is based on the story of jazz superstar Miles Davis (played by Don Cheadle), who during the height of his fame, disappeared from public view. Music reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) wants to know what’s going on and he somehow manages to get into Davis’ house. The two men form a friendship and embark on an adventure to get back a tape of Davis’ latest compositions that was recently stolen. Click here for showtimes.

Also based on a true story, The Dark Horse opens in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. When Genesis “Gen” Potini is released from an institution where he was being treated for bipolar disorder, the former chess prodigy is put in the hands of his older brother Ariki, the leader of a street gang. As Ariki plans for the initiation of Gen’s teenage nephew into the gang, Gen decides to volunteer his time and serve as coach to the youth of the Eastern Knights Chess Club. As he inspires the members of the club, Mana takes notice and recognizes his own affinity for the game, as well as his desire to rise above a life of gang violence. Click here for showtimes.

Regression opens in Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg and Halifax. Emma Watson plays Angela Gray, a young woman who accuses her father of being part of a Satanic cult that committed horrendous acts of crime against her. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) is assigned to the case. A terrified Angela insists she’s in danger for talking to Detective Kenner and tells him he is now in danger as well, because of what he knows. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in Toronto only, Colonia also stars Emma Watson, this time as a young newlywed named Lena whose husband Daniel (Daniel Brühl) is abducted by the secret police during the 1973 Chilean military coup. She tracks him to a wooded area in the south of the country, called Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony). The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by a preacher (Michael Nyqvist) but in fact, is a torture house and detention center that no one has ever escaped from. Lena joins the cult in an effort to help Daniel escape. Click here for showtimes.

Prisoner X is a Canadian film opening in Toronto, Whitby and Kanata. When a man has a car crash and the authorities find  weapons-grade uranium in the trunk of the car, they take him into custody. Believing him to be a terrorist, they torture him in order to make him talk, but when he does, it’s in a foreign language. When he suddenly starts to provide information, it’s in the form of letters and numbers that turn out to be astronomical coordinates of upcoming Supernova explosions. When they happen as he predicted, they believe he’s a time traveler from the future, who can help them stop terrorist attacks. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in Vancouver today and in Toronto next Friday, in the form of a documentary-style comedy/drama, No Men Beyond This Point offers a fascinating look at a world where women have become asexual and are no longer giving birth to males. The youngest man alive finds himself at the center of a battle to prevent men from going extinct. Click here for showtimes.

Open in Toronto today and in Ottawa next Friday, The Measure of a Man is an interesting movie about what it means to be employed and how being unemployed can strip you of your dignity. When Thierry Taugourdeau (Vincent Lindon) is laid off from his factory job, he goes through a series of humiliating ordeals in his search for work in an effort to support his family. From retraining courses to workshops where he’s criticized for being an introvert, Thierry finds that what he has to go through compromises his integrity. When he finally lands a job as a security officer at a department store, he’s faced with a new set of moral dilemmas. Originally titled La loi du marché, this movie is in French with English subtitles. Click here for showtimes.
