New movies in theaters this week – After Yang and more!

Colin Farrell in After YangWith no major feature films opening this weekend, moviegoers have a chance to see something a little different as several smaller releases hit select cities across Canada. Check them out below and watch the trailers to decide what will be your moviegoing experience this weekend. ~Alexandra Heilbron

After Yang – Suburban couple Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Jake (Colin Farrell) are raising their young daughter, Mika, whom they adopted from China. When their android Yang has a technical problem, Jake decides to get him repaired, because Mika has grown attached to him. However, they run into a problem because it’s illegal to touch a techno’s black box, so Jake finds an outlaw repairman who agrees to do recover Yang’s memory. In the process Jake discovers that the android’s memory is spyware, and if he had turned Yang in to be recycled, the government would have a wealth of data on their family. Opening in Toronto, Vancouver, Hamilton and Kingston, then expands to other cities starting March 18. Click here for showtimes.

Woman in Car – Since her husband was killed in an unsolved hit-and-run, Anne raises her seven-year-old daughter alone. Her grown stepson Owen comes for a visit, accompanied by a woman whom he claims is his girlfriend, although he doesn’t seem to be in love with her. Anne tries to hide her nervousness in front of this stranger, who exhibits odd behavior. To top it off, Anne is under pressure from her late husband’s sister. Opening in Toronto, Vancouver on March 11 and in Oakville on March 18. Click here for showtimes.

Wildhood – Link (Phillip Lewitski), a two-spirit Mi’kmaw teenager, lives with his abusive father and his younger half-brother, Travis (Avery Winters-Anthony). When Link discovers a recent birthday card from his mother that his father had hidden, Link takes Travis and hits the road, determined to use the address on the envelope to find her. Opening in Toronto and Vancouver. Click here for showtimes.

The Wolf and the Lion – When her grandfather dies, a 20-year-old pianist named Alma returns to her childhood home, lost on a deserted Canadian island. There, everything changes when a baby wolf and a lion cub in distress come into her life. Opening in select cities. Click here for showtimes.
