New movies in theaters today – London Has Fallen, Zootopia and more!

If the Oscars represent the summit of your year for everything film-related, the weeks following the ceremony bring the blues. It’s a long eight months before the next awards season arrives, but with this weekend’s slate of films opening in theaters there’s no need to fret. From action-packed thrillers to rollicking comedies, variety is the name of the game. So ditch your feelings of despondency, dry your tears and get back in line at your local cinema! ~Matthew Pariselli

Opening nationwide today, London Has Fallen is the follow-up to the smash hit Olympus Has Fallen. The intense film picks up at the British Prime Minister’s funeral, which also happens to serve as the site of a catastrophic terrorist attack. A vicious organization aims to wipe out some of the world’s most powerful leaders while bringing England to its knees and thwarting the anti-terrorist movement. Gerard Butler, who headlines one of last week’s box office winners, Gods of Egypt, reprises his role as the fierce Secret Service lead. The President of the United States (again portrayed by Aaron Eckhart) plays a pivotal role in the effort to end the terrorist group’s assault, as does the Vice President (Morgan Freeman). Zootopia is the story of four-pound bunny rabbit Judy (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) who decides she wants to become a cop. Despite facing doubt from those closest to her, she pursues her goal and enrolls in the Zootopia Police Academy, where she eventually graduates at the top of her class. Now with a spot on the force in the diverse city of Zootopia, Judy is eager to prove herself and leaps at the chance to help solve a mystery, despite apprehension on the part of Police Chief Bogo (voiced by Idris Elba). To crack the case, she teams up with fast-talking fox Nick (voiced by Jason Bateman) and together they encounter danger, make unexpected friends and enemies, and embark on a journey that ultimately reveals Judy’s heroic nature. To escape her stale job and depressive boyfriend, Kim Barker (Tina Fey) volunteers to travel to Afghanistan and the Middle East to cover the wartime conflict during “Operation Enduring Freedom.” Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which opens nationwide today, is her entertaining and hilarious journey. The American journalist quickly finds herself surrounded by a band of other crazy foreign journalists, namely Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie) and Iain MacKelpie (Martin Freeman), and in the midst of chaos, including explosive situations and discrimination against those with U.S. roots. The film is based on Barker’s memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Click here for showtimes.

Based on the first in a series of novels by Douglas Lindsay, The Legend of Barney Thomson is the story of an inept, hapless Glasgow barber (Robert Carlyle) who inadvertently falls into a string of serial murders. Stranded and desperate for a helping hand, he turns to his quirky, chain-smoking and hilarious mother (Emma Thompson). The two hatch a plan to cover up the crimes but it isn’t long before the police are on their tails. The film opens today in Toronto and Vancouver. Click here for showtimes.

Filmed in British Columbia and backed by a Canadian-heavy cast and crew, Numb is a thriller following a couple in financial distress who learn of stolen coins hidden in the remote winter wilderness. To get their hands on the cash, they join forces with a team of mysterious hitchhikers. Disorder ensues as the couple contemplate theft, and at the most pressing moment, even murder. Foreign language film The Wave, also opening in select cities today, unfolds in a small, picturesque Norwegian tourist village at the base of a towering mountain. At the height of tourist season, geologist Kristian (Kristoffer Joner) senses a shift in the mountain and knows it’s on the verge of crumbling. Armed with the knowledge that the mountain’s collapse would unleash an 85-meter-high violent tsunami, Kristian has 10 minutes to warn the public and get to high ground before it hits.
