New movies in theaters today – Race, Risen and more

With the colossal success of Deadpool last weekend, it’s clear the whole Marvel/DC Comics superhero thing is here to stay. And justly so. But, how about, just for this weekend, trying out something a little different? Seven very distinct features are opening in theaters today for you to cleanse yourself of The Blockbuster Overload.

And arguably the first superhero of the current era, Christ and the Biblical story of His Resurrection undergo a dramatic re-telling in the epic flick Risen, starring Joseph Fiennes. ~Shelby Morton

A superhero in his own right, Olympian Jesse Owens has his extraordinary origin story told in the dramatic biopic Race, starring Canadian actor Stephan James as the legendary athlete and Jason Sudeikis as his fearless coach. Based on the true story of the 1936 Berlin Olympics and in wide release across Canada today, the historic drama follows Owens as he begins his track career at Ohio State University and meets coach Larry Snyder, cementing his exceptional path to becoming the first athlete in history to win four gold medals in a single Olympiad. The drama Risen, in theaters across Canada today, tells the story of Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a Roman Centurion who is tasked by Pontius Pilate to investigate rumors of a risen Jewish Messiah by the name of Yeshua, and to locate his missing body. Clavius, a non-believer, begins to question his own faith as he delves deeper into the mystery of Yeshua’s whereabouts, witnessing miraculous acts that will eventually lead to the legendary tale of Christ’s Resurrection. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in wide release, The Witch is set in 1630 England as devout Christian couple William and Katherine, along with their five children, move to a remote farmhouse deep within a vast forest. Settled into their new home, things soon begin to fall apart: their crops are failing, their animals exhibit strange behavior and one child appears to be possessed by a demon. Even worse still, their youngest son, Samuel, suddenly disappears. William and Katherine believe their oldest daughter, Thomasin, is to blame, suspecting her to be a witch. This lack of unity and mounting paranoia will ultimately test the family’s love for one another, as well as possibly lead them into further danger. Click here for showtimes.

Katie Holmes plays a bipolar poet named Carla in the independent drama Touched with Fire, in select cities across Canada today. Overwhelmed by her disorder, Carla checks herself into a mental hospital, where she meets Marco (Luke Kirby), another new patient, who also happens to suffer from bipolar disorder. The two instantly connect and begin a romance, but their combined mania drives them to further, more dangerous insanity. Click here for showtimes.

Colombia’s Oscar-nominated Embrace of the Serpent follows Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, along his 30-year journey with two scientists as they search for the rare healing plant yakruna. This epic tale is loosely based on the diaries of German scientist Theodor Koch-Grunberg and American scientist Richard Evans Schultes, and opens in Toronto, Edmonton and Ottawa today. Click here for showtimes.

Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr is the real story behind 29-year-old Omar Khadr, a Canadian with extremist parents, who, at only 15, was accused of killing an American soldier in Afghanistan. The young man was captured and subsequently placed in a detention center in Guantanamo Bay for 10 years. This dramatic documentary, which opens in Toronto today, gives Toronto’s own Khadr the opportunity to tell his story in his own words. Click here for showtimes.

Four disgraced priests are exiled to a monastery in a small Chilean beach town in the drama The Club. Under the care of nurturing Sister Monica, the men are well-fed, relaxed and even enjoying themselves. This idyllic existence is interrupted when a fifth priest arrives, whose violent past come back to haunt him and he eventually kills himself. In order to quell a scandal, the Church sends Father Garcia to examine the monastery and counsel the four men, forcing them to relive their own less-than-holy transgressions.
