New movies in theatres today – Krampus and more!

KrampusThere’s a Christmas horror movie opening in wide release today, as well as an assortment of smaller films opening in select cities. Take a look at what’s new in theatres this weekend.

Krampus take place at Christmastime, but Santa’s not coming to this house. Opening across Canada, this movie is about a boy who get disillusioned about Christmas due to family woes. This lack of festive spirit unleashes the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. Click here for showtimes.

Legend stars Tom Hardy in the roles of identical twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray, who terrorized London during the 1950s and 1960s. It’s playing in a number of cities across Canada. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in Toronto, Calgary, Saskatoon, Halifax and Vancouver, Life details the friendship between photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), who was assigned to do a photo shoot of actor James Dean (Dane DeHaan) when he was on the cusp of stardom. The two go on a week-long road trip and the resulting photos reveal the private side of the reluctant star. Click here for showtimes.

Playing in select cities is a fictional tale based on true events in A Royal Night Out. British princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, aged 19 and 14, slip out of Buckingham Palace to join the rest of London for the massive celebrations on V.E. Day on May 8, 1945 to celebrate the end of WWII. Going incognito, the girls pretend for one night that they are commoners. Click here for showtimes.

Also in select theatres is the thriller MI-5. Disgraced British chief of counter-terrorism Harry Pearce must team with Will Holloway to stop an escaped terrorist from blowing up London. Click here for showtimes.

Debuting in Toronto, Hitchcock/Truffault is a fascinating look at a week-long series of interviews that resulted when French director François Truffaut persuaded critically-acclaimed British director Alfred Hitchcock to chat with him on camera. This documentary opens in Vancouver and Victoria on December 18 and in Winnipeg on January 21. Click here to see Toronto showtimes for the upcoming week.

Also opening in Toronto is the drama I Smile Back, starring Sarah Silverman as a drug-addicted, self-destructive New Jersey housewife who begins to come apart at the seams. Click here for showtimes.
