New on DVD: Wild Horses, 5 Flights Up

Wild HorsesComing out today on DVD and/or Blu-ray is a collection of indie films that are either coming straight to video or received a limited release in theatres, and sometimes those are the best films you’ll ever see. So have a look at what you can view in the comfort of your home as of today, including the film Wild Horses starring Robert Duvall and James Franco, and 5 Flights Up, starring Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman.

Veteran actor Robert Duvall, 84, directs and co-stars with his fourth wife, 43-year-old actress Luciana Pedraza Duvall, in Wild Horses. Luciana plays Texas Ranger Samantha Payne, who reopens a 15-year-old missing person case, and uncovers evidence that suggests that the boy was likely murdered on a ranch belonging to wealthy family man, Scott Briggs (Duvall). James Franco plays Duvall’s estranged son Ben.

In 5 Flights Up, long-time married couple Ruth (Diane Keaton) and Alex (Morgan Freeman) discover that selling their Brooklyn apartment isn’t about winding down, but starting a new adventure. After living in their apartment for 40 years, Ruth and Alex have a hard time imagining living anywhere else, but even so, they let Ruth’s niece list their property to see how well it would do in the market.

Viggo Mortensen stars in Jauja, the story of Danish general Gunnar Dinesen (Mortensen), who is assigned to a scouting mission in 1882 Patagonia. When his 15-year-old daughter Ingeborg runs off into the wilderness with a young soldier, he goes after her, but finds the soldier alone and near death.

The animated feature Yellowbird is about an orphaned bird (voiced by Seth Green) who yearns for a family of his own. He tricks a migrating flock to follow him across the globe—and into a series of comic misadventures! Admitting to his hoax, Yellowbird must now develop a brilliant strategy to rescue the birds…and become a true hero in the eyes of his new family.

Kung Fu Killer is about a serial killer targeting top martial arts masters. Incarcerated Kung fu master Hahou believes he’s the only one with the skills to stop the killer, so he convinces the police to release him from jail. They soon have their doubts about Hahou’s true allegiance after a series of mysterious events.

Noir (NWA) tells the story of Flower, a 17-year-old mother of Haitian origin living in an area of Montreal where street gangs rule, who is in an abusive relationship with the father of her child. At the other end of the spectrum, Dickens, 16, has one thing in mind: to belong to the gang controlled by his older brother. Recently released from prison, Kadhafi, a 26-year-old rapper and former street gang member, wants to reconnect with his wife and son and make a living with his music. Suzie, a white stripper, falls for a black gangster who treats her like a princess, while she also has feelings for a white man who seems to ignore her long absences. The fate of these individuals will intersect.
