Fantastic Beasts new on DVD

There is something for everyone in this week’s new DVD releases.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a magical return to author J.K. Rowling‘s wizarding world; Patriots Day recounts the tragic events of the Boston Marathon bombing; and in the historical drama Silence, we see how one man is pushed to the limits of his faith.

Check out the complete list of new movies out on DVD today. ~Ashleen Grange

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – This Harry Potter-themed film takes place in 1926, as Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) ventures to find and document magical creatures. But after arriving in New York for a brief stopover during a global excursion, his misplaced magical case leads to the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts in the No-Maj (American equivalent of “Muggle”) world.

Silence – At a time when Christianity has been outlawed in Japan, two young Christian missionaries, Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garrpe (Adam Driver), travel there to search for their missing mentor, Father Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson). In an attempt to ferret the Japanese Christian population out, officials force those who are suspected of being Christians to stomp on a carved image of Christ. Those who refuse are killed.

Patriots Day – An account of the bravery of the police force during the events surrounding the unspeakable April 15, 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. In the brutal aftermath of the explosions, Sgt. Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg), FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) spring into action to help those injured and track down the terrorists responsible for the attack. As lives are lost and fear runs rampant, a select group of individuals rally to combat hate and demonstrate heroism.

Why Him? – A straight-laced, overprotective dad named Ned (Bryan Cranston) and his family travel on holiday to visit his daughter Stephanie (Zoey Deutch), who’s studying at Stanford. There, Ned meets his worst nightmare: Stephanie’s new socially awkward billionaire boyfriend Laird (James Franco), who is by far the opposite of Ned’s envisioned perfect suitor. When Ned discovers that Laird is planning to propose to Stephanie, his panic and one-sided rivalry turns into a mission to stop the engagement before it happens.

A Monster Calls – Due to his mother’s (Felicity Jones) worsening illness, and constant bullying by classmates, 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) is plagued by nightmares. One night, a voice calls to him and Conor discovers an unlikely ally in a tree-shaped monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) that appears at his bedroom window. The monster tells Conor three stories that draw him into a fantastical world and takes him on a journey of courage, truth, and faith.

A Tale of Love and Darkness – In the mid-1940s, eight-year-old Amos (Amir Tessler) is living with his father Arieh (Gilad Kahana) and mother Fania (Natalie Portman), refugees who have fled to Palestine for safety. To escape their circumstances, Fania tells Amos that they should make up a story, and begins a bonding ritual that ignites their imagination. Their life, challenges and the changing times are seen through the eyes of young Amos, who eventually follows his own ideals and political beliefs.
