New releases this weekend – The Intern, Hotel Transylvania 2 and more!

TheInternThis weekend offers a roster of films ranging from comedy and drama to horror and true story. Make a choice and go see one, or all of them!

Robert De Niro is The Intern, a 70-year-old widower, unhappily retired in this North America-wide release. When Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), founder of an online fashion business, takes part in a community outreach program, she ends up with Ben Whittaker as her senior intern, and although rusty and old school, he hits it off with the young staff and the boss herself. Hotel Transylvania 2 is an animated flick opening across North America that features the voices of Adam Sandler as Dracula and the always hilarious Mel Brooks as his father, Vlad. Grandson Dennis is part human and part vampire. Grandpa is coming to the hotel for a visit and that revelation is not going to go over too well! Click here for showtimes.

Playing in select cities, Pawn Sacrifice recounts the true story of American chess champion Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) as he prepares for a legendary game against Russian Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber). Click here for showtimes.

Don’t be fooled by the color in the title The Green Inferno, because there is a lot of red in it. And by that, we mean blood. For you arm chair travelers, this movie whisks you to the Amazon jungle where a band of campus radicals have come to save an Amazonian tribe from the illegal bulldozing and subsequent dismantling of their jungle home. Unfortunately, the tables are turned and after their plane crash lands, they are no longer the saviors, but are in need of rescue themselves. Playing in select cities. Click here for showtimes.

In the biopic The Walk, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a French high-wire artist who dreamed of daring stunts from the time he was a young boy. On August 7, 1974, that dream became a reality when he performed an audacious stunt: a high wire walk between the World Trade Center towers. Playing in Toronto and Montreal is Sicario, which recently screened at TIFF. FBI Agent Kate Macy, played by the impeccable Emily Blunt, joins a government task force. The team already includes Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro and once the action starts, it doesn’t stop and Agent Macy quickly realizes she is in way over her head. Click here for showtimes.

Playing in select cities, Hellions is about a teenager (Chloe Rose) who must survive a Halloween night from Hell when malevolent trick-or-treaters come knocking at her door. Click here for showtimes.

Playing in Toronto, Montreal, Medicine Hat and on VOD, Mississippi Grind is about two itinerant gamblers (Ryan Reynolds, Ben Mendelsohn) who hit the road aiming to buy their way into a legendary New Orleans high stakes poker game. Click here for showtimes.

Playing in Toronto and Lethbridge, in Wildlike we meet Mackenzie (Ella Purnell), 14, who is sent to stay with her uncle (Brian Geraghty) in Alaska while her mother is in treatment. When her uncle’s attention becomes inappropriate and threatening, she runs away and meets a gruff backpacker named Bartlett (Bruce Greenwood), who’s also from Seattle. She decides to follow Bartlett, hoping eventually he’ll lead her home. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in Toronto, The Stanford Prison Experiment is based on the true story of Stanford University professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo (Billy Crudup), who, in 1971, cast 24 student volunteers as prisoners and guards in a simulated jail to examine the source of abusive behavior in the prison system.
