Pam Anderson calls Calgary Stampede cruel

By Alexandra Heilbron on July 16, 2010 | 10 Comments

Pamela Anderson is in Montreal for the Just For Laughs Festival, but also to unveil a new animal-rights advertisement that features her posing in a bikini with markings as if she’s been tagged for a butcher, on behalf of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. However, the poster, which is far less racy than many released by PETA, has been deemed sexist by Montreal officials, who refused to give PETA a permit to hold the launch. PETA Senior V.P. Dan Mathews says, “I think that city officials are confusing ‘sexy’ with ‘sexist.'” Anderson, who grew up in Canada, said, “In a city that is known for its exotic dancing and for being progressive and edgy, how sad that a woman would be banned from using her own body in a political protest over the suffering of cows and chickens… I didn’t think that Canada would be so puritanical.” When asked her thoughts on the deaths of six horses at the Calgary Stampede, Anderson said she considers the event “very cruel. I’m not a fan. I never have been.” Two horses have died from heart attacks at the Stampede; two were euthanized after sustained injuries and a fifth broke its back during a bucking bronco competition. Another died in its stall of causes that are still unclear. Anderson is one of a growing number of people condemning the event, which has sparked protests from as far away as Britain. [Poll=204]

They should not run horses on extremely hot days; they should remove any events that cause suffering to animals like bucking broncos (in which they put a strap around the horse’s testicals to get it to buck), no more roping and throwing any animal to the ground (a lot of cows and goats sustain broken bones in these events) and modify the chuckwagon races or don’t hold them in extreme heat. There was a guy who had a heart attack during a chuckwagon race as well. I think eventing should also be modified so the jumps aren’t solid – a lot of horses and people die during those competitions too.

I agree with what amanda has said. I’m all for PETA and the services they give, and I don’t see how the officials would label this as “sexist.” A male could do the same ad, if that’s the lines they’re thinking on…?

Seriously, when did we start caring what Pamela Anderson says? She got famous for bleaching her hair and “enhancing” herself with bags of saline. Her opinion carries no more weight that any other self-serving celebrities.

I have no problem with the Stampede nor any of its events. We worry far more about the well-being of animals than we do of other human beings. We’ll step around a homeless person, but get up in arms over an animal’s discomfort for a few minutes.

There are more animal shelters in the US than there are homeless shelters. When did we start placing the welfare of animals equal to or above that of humans?

    And I agree with Kevin.

    Meat is murder…tasty, tasty murder.

billboard entering Montreal….”a city that is known for its exotic dancing”…locals would be so proud to boast such a fine attribute…

Pamela Anderson may care about her causes but her biggest cause has always been promoting herself in any way, shape or form…

@Amanda – Know what you are talking about before you make public comments.

“…they put a strap around the horses testicals to get it to buck”

Most of the bucking horses are mares (female horses) and geldings (castrated male horses), so they don’t have testicles (note spelling). They *do* put a strap around the horse’s flank (waist), which does make them buck. But it’s not because it’s painful.

“a lot of cows and goats sustain broken bones in these events”

They don’t use cows or goats in these events. They do use steers and calves in some events. If you’ve been seeing goats, it’s not the Stampede.

“I think eventing should also be modified so the jumps arent solid”

Completely off topic, eh? I assume you know there is not “eventing” at the Stampede.

The chuckwagon horses are ex-track thoroughbreds. The death rate of the chuck horses is about the same as the death rate of thoroughbreds at regular horse racing events.

For those of you in support of PETA, I hope you don’t own a dog or a cat. You do know that they consider pet ownership to be slavery, and are trying to have the ownership of cats and dogs (and all other animals) banned? And how about their lovely track record regarding euthanasia?

Number of pets PETA “rescued” in the years 1998-2009: 27,478
Number of those pets actually rehomed in those 10+ years: 3,091
Number of animals PETA had euthanized in those years: 23,640
Number of animals transferred to other rescues: 477

    PETA kill rate: 86%

@Seawalker. I was talking about all events in which horses are involved, that’s why the reference to eventing. I know goats are used in rodeos, I’ve seen it on TV. Again, not pointing at the Calgary Stampede specifically. Sorry for the mistake, I didn’t mean their testicles (omg, did I have a spelling mistake earlier? And do you have a pickle shoved somewhere it shouldn’t be?) I meant their private parts. It is painful, or a horse wouldn’t break his back trying to get the damn thing off. Or maybe you’d like to explain why the horse was so anxious to get something off that wasn’t painful that he ended up killing himself?

Here’s a link to a video in which a horse is beaten at a rodeo (not the Stampede) because it wouldn’t buck:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLeZXnP-LwU

And here’s a description of how they actually get a horse to buck:

“Electric prods, spurs, and bucking straps are used to irritate and enrage animals used in rodeos. The flank, or bucking, strap or ropewhich is used to make horses and bulls buckis tightly cinched around their abdomens, which causes the animals to buck vigorously to try to rid themselves of the torment. Hattie Klotz, Bucking Bronco Dies in Corel Center Rodeo, The Ottawa Citizen 9 Aug. 1999.

Oh, and btw, calves are young cows or bulls. I was referring to cows meaning bulls as well, because most people just call them cows. My bad.

certain to thecaliper shimsremain installed around effectively since the foot brake protections as it should be. brake parts have a metal tabs with 2 the actual, this can be an prefer light. whenever the topper wear to any tip the damage barometer rubs around the rotor leading a large pitched squeal providing it’s time to adjust braking system.
