Queen & Slim offers outstanding performances – DVD review

In the drama Queen & Slim, Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) and Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) have just enjoyed their first date, and Slim is driving Queen home when they’re pulled over by a white police officer for a minor traffic infraction.

A misunderstanding with the officer leads to the situation escalating as he pulls out his gun. In the ensuing confusion, Slim kills the officer in self-defense. Queen, who is a lawyer, decides she and Slim need to leave the scene immediately before other police officers arrive and jump to incorrect conclusions. The terrified duo go on the run, in fear for their lives.

The footage from the police officer’s dash-cam goes viral. When the public learns that the officer was a racist who shot and killed a black man a few years prior, Queen and Slim become heroes, especially in black communities. However, it also leads to riots breaking out in other parts of the country, in which another police officer is killed.

Queen & Slim is filled with drama, crime and romance as we follow the lives of the two protagonists, who are very different. Queen works in a professional setting and is ambitious and witty, while Slim is extremely laid-back and religious.

The film explores the deeper meaning behind the war against black people and the criminal justice system in America.

Daniel Kaluuya, known for his award-winning role in Get Out and his role in Black Panther, doesn’t disappoint in this movie. Considering the fact that both he and Turner-Smith are British, they very convincingly play Americans born in the South. They also take time showing the audience who Queen and Slim are, as they bring their characters to life. ~Allison Palmer
