If the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi isn’t enough excitement, writer-director Rian Johnson is now at the helm of his own Star Wars trilogy.
Although The Last Jedi doesn’t hit theaters until mid-December, Johnson has already made an impression on Lucasfilm and Disney. In a statement on the Star Wars website, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, “He’s a creative force and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the greatest joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
According to the news release, the new trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker saga and “Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”
So far, we know the first film will be written and directed by Johnson and produced by long-time collaborator Ram Bergman. In a joint statement, the two said, “We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” adding, “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
While details are currently pretty scarce, this announcement is sure to build even more anticipation for the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which hits theaters December 15th. ~Hayley Michaud
