Ex-Beatle makes elderly fan cry

By Alexandra Heilbron on May 22, 2009 | 51 Comments

Ringo Starr at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show in London Ringo Starr apparently made a woman in her eighties cry when he refused to sign an autograph for her at the Chelsea Flower show this week. Last October, on his website, he warned fans “with peace and love” saying he would no longer open fan mail or sign items sent to him. Britain’s Got Talent/America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan commented on the incident on his blog, saying: “The ex-Beatle apparently informed the poor woman, ‘I don’t sign autographs, read that on my website.’ If she even knew how to use the internet, which I doubt, this lady would have found she could BUY Mr Starr’s signature there on various items of memorabilia.” He added: “Ringo was always the least talented, ugliest, jammiest member of the Beatles. I think we can now safely add the words ‘disgusting’, ‘selfish’, ‘greedy’ and ‘thoughtless’ to the list too.”

Who do you think made you so rich and famous, Ringo? Your FANS. Give the poor old woman a break and make an exception from your selfish (cause its all about YOU) stupid (cause “peace and love” have NOTHING to do with it) new policy.

  2. D • May 22, 2009 @ 8:42 AM

That’s disgusting. Not like your signature is worth much compared to your anyone else from The Beatles.

  3. Minerva • May 22, 2009 @ 8:44 AM

Good on Piers Morgan!! He got the nail right on the head and I’m glad he made his comments public. Who’d want that ugly sap’s autograph anyway? The old lady most likely wanted it to give a child or grandchild, thinking it might be worth something some day. That guy always made me sick anyway and still does.

  4. Ernie • May 22, 2009 @ 9:16 AM

That is funny. Haha. Quit worshipping these stars you stupid morons. Ringo did the right thing…I wouldn’t want some old hag grovelling and snivelling at my feet.

  5. Bev • May 22, 2009 @ 9:18 AM

He should be glad that people still WANT his autograph and send him fan mail. That shows that they still love him. That was so rude. That really changes my opinion of him. It took fans to put him where he is today. Without them he would still be a nobody.

  6. Nancy • May 22, 2009 @ 10:17 AM

I totally agree with Piers. Ringo is an @$$! As for the “old hag”, Ernie wants you to get away from and stop “grovelling and snivelling” at his feet! You know who you are.

  7. Tara • May 22, 2009 @ 11:15 AM

i cant believe how selfish some stars are these days. they cant give up a few seconds to sign an autograph. they just want more and more money.. greedy bastard

  8. Dan • May 22, 2009 @ 12:08 PM

What an arrogant ass clown!!! I can wipe his ass from here to england and back by drumming on cardboard boxs so he should be grateful to have any fans at all. Seriously some people should make a reality check sometime cuz who make a star (talented or not)? THE FANS!!!

  9. Kathleen MacDonald • May 22, 2009 @ 12:59 PM

From what I have seen lately about Ringo Starr, I think he is going through “manopause” and seriousely needs some hormone treatment to get rid of his crabbiness. Soon people are not going to want anything from him.

    Peace and Love,
    Kathleen

  10. jeff • May 22, 2009 @ 1:15 PM

Give the guy a break. Regardless of the fact that fans made him famous and rich.
You sign autographs for 40+ years and see how you feel. No doubt most people that have voiced there opinions above have not lived 40+ years let alone had to do the same thing for that long. He has probable spent more time signing autographs then some of you have worked in your whole lives.

  11. JJ • May 22, 2009 @ 1:29 PM

I’m of two minds here. I agree with Jeff, Ringo is in retirement and I’m sure since George died, the requests have come at him more because it is just he and Paul left. Then you have the folks that make a living at getting autographs and selling them (which spoils it for those who will treasure the autograph they get), why should they be making that money, they didn’t do anything to deserve it. At the same time though, Ringo could have given this poor lady a break. What ever happened to “respect your elders”. Sounds like he’s become a cranky old man.

  12. mandee • May 22, 2009 @ 1:38 PM

give him a break? try signing autographs for 40+ years? WOW that must be a TOUGH LIFE !! what about those of us that actually WORK for a living? the ones that DONT just play in a band and have fun our entire lives? the only WORK this guy had to do in his entire existence is thank his fans by signing autographs. do you not think that it seems like a pretty good gig? you get rich and famous and have everyone love you and all you have to do is play in a band and sign papers for the people that are the reason you are so rich and famous? id love to see how he would have managed to live at all if he had to WORK for a living. if singing a piece of paper for 40+ years is too hard for him, imagine him working in a donut shop, a hospital, a factory. he would have been out living on the streets a long time ago because he seems like he would be nothing more than a bum. and who honestly would refuse an 80 year old woman? i disagree that she wanted the signature for anyone but herself, unless it could have been for her husband. maybe she actually LIKED ringo? well, if he keeps it up, all the people that made him so damn important are going to wake up and realize what a mistake they made. then where will he be? pathetic loser.

  13. Mary • May 22, 2009 @ 1:57 PM

Ernie, your a disgusting no brains. Is this how you refer to your mother and grandmother as old grovelling, snivelling hags. Just remember sunshine your day will come.

  14. Sierra • May 22, 2009 @ 2:06 PM

Ernie, crawl back under your rock, you & the ugly beatle give humanity a bad name.

  15. Jane • May 22, 2009 @ 2:18 PM

Mandee, get a grip. He surely did more than sign autographs for a living to get to where he is today. Who’s to say he didn’t work as hard as everyone else in any other occupation? He chose music as his career and spent decades in the spotlight. His privacy is gone, and his personal time is spent entertaining people around the world. I don’t think it was right for him to deny an old woman in her 80s an autograph. To refer her to his website is pure ignorance. However, I don’t think it’s any better to attack him on the fact that he’s done nothing in his career and is completely obligated to his fans. The entertainment business is a two-way street.

  16. Jo-Anne • May 22, 2009 @ 4:01 PM

first off, I doubt Ringo will suffer any kind of dire consequences as a result of his actions. Will he still be remembered as a member of one of the most famous history making bands ever? Positively. Could he have been nicer to the woman seeking the autograph? For sure. Was the caption “Ex-Beatle makes elderly woman cry” a tad overdone? Absolutely.

(some) people “cry” when a promotion passes them over, when they view a sappy movie, when the dry cleaners lose their favourite shirt…shedding tears is not always monumental…I’m sure millions cried when Adam lost on Idol…I’m sure Nancy cries when I don’t answer her posts…okay, okay, okay…kidding…on the Idol one…

  17. Nancy • May 22, 2009 @ 4:12 PM

Cry? I freaking jump for joy when you don’t answer my posts…waiting, hoping for your alzheimers to kick in and you finally forget my name or even perhaps, this website…LOL. Anyways, Ernie commented above saying he wants you to get away from his feet. Oh, and you’re not going to wish me a happy birthday?

  18. Jo-Anne • May 22, 2009 @ 4:19 PM

Your birthday and you’re on here???

actually…forget I said that…where else would you be????

  19. Ernie • May 22, 2009 @ 4:26 PM

I welcome the day I am an old withered turd so I can shake my cane at you, Mary and Sierra. Jo-Anne and Nancy are having a tickle fight here.

  20. Nancy • May 22, 2009 @ 4:36 PM

What? Condemning me for being in the same place you are..? It’s just another day, Jo-Anne. Still had to work, still have kids to raise, still single and not claiming to be “happily married” while “still” causing sh!t on here, hahaha.

  21. tributegirl • May 22, 2009 @ 4:50 PM

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NANCY!!!

  22. Nancy • May 22, 2009 @ 5:21 PM

    Thanks, Tributegirl.

    Jane on May 22, 2009 2:18 PM

playing in a band is NOT considered WORK. not by a long shot. and his privacy was gone? and he has to spend his “personal time entertaining people around the world” ? well, considering the fact he is RICH, known worldwide, got to travel the world at other peoples expenses and once again got to PLAY IN A BAND and have FUN his entire life (because im sure if he didnt LOVE his job, he wouldnt have become famous) i doubt it was his “personal time”. i spend my time serving people coffee, i hate it, but i dont EVER refuse to serve them. so what makes this guys so special that he should be allowed to refuse his FANS that MADE HIM who he is a simple autograph? it would have taken 10 seconds out of his day, it wouldnt have physically excerted (sorry i dont know how to spell this word), or hurt him all it would have done was made an 80 year old womans day. what im saying is, if people thought i was amazing for making their coffee, and for the next 40 or more years they wanted my autograph, id just be grateful that in a world so full of change, people still remember my name and still consider me great for my accomplishments in life. when people make you who you are how can you treat them so pathetically?

    !!!!!!!!! happy birthday nancy !!!!!!!!!

  27. Steve • May 23, 2009 @ 1:31 AM

Boo…hooo…hooo you bunch of whiners. Who are you/we to tell Ringo what he can or cannot do, can or cannot say? Unfortunate for the elderly gal…sure but what about the other side of the coin…Richard’s?

Piss off…respect his, and anyone else’s decision.

  28. mandee • May 23, 2009 @ 2:12 AM

really? you honestly came in here and asked us who we are to tell ringo what he can and cannot do or say? well, who are you to tell ME, or the other posters on here, what we can or cannot say or think? how about you respect our opinions and maybe we will respect yours and consider respecting peoples decisions? id understand if we asked him to take off his pants him flat out refusing, but an autograph? come on.

  29. mandee • May 23, 2009 @ 2:13 AM

sorry, forgot to include… “Piss off…”

  30. anon • May 23, 2009 @ 7:17 AM

Personally I preferred the Stones over the Beatles back then

    Fame–Modesty–Lack of Respect!

    Shame on you Ringo Starr–
I guess your Light is diminishing!

  31. dee • May 23, 2009 @ 7:19 AM

    Many happy returns
May your B-Day wishes come true

  32. Nancy • May 23, 2009 @ 12:55 PM

Thanks Anon, mandee and dee! Had a good birthday even though “all” my wishes didn’t come true. I didn’t win the Super 7…hahaha! I did have a fun time for about an hour (give or take) yesterday…getting on Jo-Anne’s nerves. That was fun for awhile seeing as my work was done. Made time go a bit faster. Mandee, I love your May 23, 2009 2:13 AM comment! Cracked me right up!! 😀

  33. Nancy • May 23, 2009 @ 1:00 PM

Oh…no demigod, I’m still young (but legal) and totally gorgeous! 😉 You only wish you could get near me!

  34. mandee • May 23, 2009 @ 2:40 PM

glad you had a good birthday nancy. what all did you do other than pick on people? 😛 and thanks, i was intending it to be funny 😉 well, i just bought myself one of those old school nintendo systems, jaws, friday the 13th, mario world 3 for games and the guy threw in the gun and mario 1 for free. only paid 50 for it all. so im gonna go spend some time playing my new game lol. it was cheap, because anywhere else its like 65 for JUST the console! so im excited, ttyl have a great day all !

  35. Anon • May 23, 2009 @ 3:32 PM

    Another Blue Anon?
    anon on May 23, 2009 7:17 AM

  36. Nancy • May 23, 2009 @ 7:08 PM

Awe mandee, I didn’t “pick on people”…just had a little play time with Jo-Jo, that’s all…all in good fun! After I finished with her, I went to my parents for cake and birthday loot, making a pit stop at the liquor store for vodka coolers first, LOL. You know you’re getting older and have everything you need when your birthday gifts consist of things for your home, such as wind chimes, a Magic Bullet, etc. Hahahaha! My mom thought the Magic Bullet would be handy for me to make our breakfast smoothies. Afterwards, we just came home and watched movies…and a couple vodka coolers went down quite nicely too but, I had to get up early this morning and go buy a new lawnmower.

  37. SR • May 23, 2009 @ 7:32 PM

I agree with Piers Morgan….what an f-ing a$$hole Ringo Starr is! Who the hell would want his autograph after that is beyond me. No one should buy any of his sh*t off his website…It’s junk!

  38. mandee • May 24, 2009 @ 2:26 PM

lol i dont care if you pick on people. 😛 that sucks that you had to buy a new lawnmower. man, i LOVE windchimes and the magic bullet !!! my brother gave me the magic bullet for christmas the first year it came out, but mine was defective and wouldnt shut off once we turned it on, so i had to take it back…but since i have a shopping problem i spent all the money on other things since they were sold out of the magic bullet and never did end up getting one. let me know what you think of it! what else did you get? i love getting things for my house, even though i still live at home lol and im still in my 20s. 🙂 doesnt mean youre old, just means you know how to appreciate helpful gifts. what movies did you watch? i just last night saw the preview for taken. i totally wanna see that. i also watched donnie darko and s darko. i enjoyed them, but s darko was too much like donnie darko.

  39. Carol • May 24, 2009 @ 2:45 PM

Ringo star is an idiot, like many other famous people we write and discuss on Tribte. But Mandee, sorry, it is work. The entertainment world is hard work but of a different mentality than what the rest of us do. I wouldn’t want it, but without the Ringo’s of the world, who would we listen to, what would we watch? Without them, we might have to hang with family and talk to them…can you imagine that? Seriosly though, it is work, but part of his work is supporting the fans who support him. If he wants to stay in the limelight after all these years, the same things are still required, including autographs.

  40. Carol • May 24, 2009 @ 2:46 PM

P.S. Happy Belated Birthday Nancy! Sounds like a good one. I like spending mine with family too…wouldn’t have it any other way.

  41. Nancy • May 24, 2009 @ 3:30 PM

I didn’t get much in the line of gifts, mandee. There’s nothing I need. I just prefer to be with my kids and family. My kids each made me a card though, which was really sweet. As for the lawnmower…rrrrr but, the grass needed to be cut! I bought the ‘Taken’ dvd when it came out 2 weeks ago…it’s gooood!! One thing I hate in certain movies though, is that alot of the action scenes are in the dark, so you can hear it but you can barely see it.

  42. demigod • May 24, 2009 @ 5:21 PM

    Nancy on May 24, 2009 3:30 PM

Nothing you need?? Surely you could use fresh batteries for your sex toys. Maybe some new chew toys? 🙂

  43. mandee • May 24, 2009 @ 5:50 PM

thats good that you dont need much. superficial people suck. i dont ever need anything because im a shopaholic. i cant help it. and thats a great birthday, spending it with the people that you love. im sure that taken is great, it looks amazing i cant wait to see it !!!! 😀 and yes i agree about some scenes being too dark, some are also too action packed that i sometimes miss a lot of what happens. demi, thats pretty rude. sounds like YOU need a muzzle.

  44. Nancy • May 24, 2009 @ 6:32 PM

Hahaha. Demigod is just mad because he doesn’t stand a chance!! He’s also not making any sense, considering how much more “intelligent” he claims to be than I. I mean, aren’t “chew toys” for dogs? Well, since when do dogs use “sex toys”? Which is it, demigod? It’s either one or the other, can’t be both! But, I don’t need either…thanks anyways. I don’t want your sloppy seconds…YUCK!! 😛

  45. tributegirl • May 24, 2009 @ 7:16 PM

Um, yeah, sorry demigod, but that wasn’t a very nice comment.

  46. demigod • May 24, 2009 @ 7:25 PM

I’m just messin’ with you Nancycakes..I’m sure you’re the hottest thing on 4 legs lol

  47. tributegirl • May 24, 2009 @ 7:43 PM

    hahahaha, that’s too funny demigod….”Nancycakes”!

  48. demigod • May 24, 2009 @ 7:51 PM

    All in good fun 🙂

  49. Nancy • May 24, 2009 @ 9:16 PM

Actually, I do have 4 legs…us “humans” call 2 of them arms though, LOL. And I stand tall and proud!

    “Nancycakes”…LOL. I’m blushing!

  50. Crystal • May 25, 2009 @ 12:34 AM

Well Ringo is an idiot, Happy Belated Birthday Nancy, and by the sounds of it you got the best gifts ever…. practical ones… those are my favourite…. my last birthday I got a new vaccumm cleaner and a food saver…. and believe me getting house gifts for birthdays does not make you old considering I turned 23 my last birthday 🙂

  51. Francesca • November 21, 2009 @ 10:45 PM

Maybe it’s sour grapes. I have trouble believing the ugly disposable drummer Beatle really ever got much mail, especially in, hello, 2009!

I know hippies are stupid, but seriously, I just can’t comprehend being moved to send parrot face a statement of my love and devotion, seriously.
