Rip Torn caught breaking into bank

Actor Rip Torn (real name: Elmore Rual Torn, Jr.) 78, was caught breaking into a bank in Salisbury, Connecticut at about 9:40 p.m. last night. He was drunk and was carrying a loaded revolver. Torn had broken a window to gain entrance. State police arrived on scene within minutes and took Torn to Troop B arracks in North Canaan, where he is being held on $100,000 bond. He was charged with carrying a gun without a permit and while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief. A resident of Salisbury, Torn is scheduled to appear at Bantam Superior Court today. This was not Torn’s first alcohol-related arrest. He was acquitted by a jury in a 2004 drunk-driving case and pleaded guilty in 2007 to a lesser charge of being ability impaired in a different case. More recently, Torn was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane on December 14, 2008. Torn plays Don Geiss on the hit series 30 Rock, and in the past few years has appeared in movies such as Bee Movie, Dodgeball and Marie Antoinette.
