Coast Guard suspends efforts in Rob Stewart’s disappearance – update

UPDATE: Rob’s sister, Alex Stewart has posted the following on her Facebook page: “Rob has been found, peacefully in the ocean. There are no words. We are so deeply grateful to everyone who helped search, and happy that Rob passed while doing what he loved. We are working on how best to honour his incredible work. My family asks that you give us some private time to grieve. Thank you everyone.”

Original story: Rob Stewart’s parents, Brian and Sandy Stewart, have announced that they are continuing the search to find their son, who went missing Tuesday afternoon at 5:15 p.m. following a dive off the coast of Islamorada in Florida. They still believe Rob is out there and they are asking anyone in the vicinity who can help in the search to come forward — whether they have a boat or can walk the shores surrounding the area where Rob disappeared.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced today in a press conference that they were suspending their search at sunset after three days of intensive searching covering approximately 5,987 square miles.

However, Brian Stewart sent a plea to the public during a family press conference: “Come out and help us tomorrow, or whatever the day — if you’ve got some free time on the weekend and have a Sea-Doo or a kayak, or a canoe, please come and help us… For information to come out and volunteer, go to www.sharkwater.com — that’s Rob’s own website… For all his fans, if you can’t come help us, you can help by donating so we can keep hiring people [to continue searching].”

He added, “I thank my family and I thank you guys. It’s been the hardest time in my life but I still believe he’s out there.”
