Influential songwriter and guitarist Lou Reed, whose music career spanned five decades and inspired generations of rock lovers, has died at the age of 71. The cause of death is unknown, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May. Revered and idolized, Brooklyn-born Reed began his career as a songwriter for small independent record company before forming the now iconic rock band The Velvet Underground with original members John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker. With their distinct sound and look, they caught the attention of artist Andy Warhol and would collaborate with him on several projects. Reed went on to establish a solo career under the guidance of David Bowie, who produced his first solo album Transformer in 1972. The album included some of his most famous songs, including Walk on the Wild Side, Satellite of Love and Vicious. He would be eventually reunite with Velvet Underground in 1990, before the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. He continued making music until his death at his Long Island home, which he shared with wife Laurie Anderson. ~Raj-Kabir Birk
