Sam Mendes’ film 1917 dominates at BAFTA Awards 2020

Sam Mendes‘ World War I drama, 1917, dominated at the 73rd British Academy Film and Television Awards, which took place Sunday night at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The film took home seven awards, including Best Film and Best Director.

Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for his turn as Joker. He used his acceptance speech to call out the lack of diversity in this year’s BAFTAs categories, urging the film industry to dismantle a “system of oppression.” He said: “I feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege. I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here. I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry and in ways that we benefit from.” 

He continued: “I don’t think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment, although that’s what we give ourselves every year. I think people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work. This is not a self-righteous condemnation because I’m ashamed to say that I’m part of the problem.”

Renée Zellweger won Best Actress for Judy. In the supporting categories, Laura Dern won for her portrayal of a divorce lawyer in Netflix’s Marriage Story, while Brad Pitt won for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Brad wasn’t present to accept the award, so his co-star Margot Robbie picked up the award on his behalf. Since Brad has been giving hilarious speeches this award season, he treated his audience to another good one. Margot read out his speech: “Hey Britain, heard you just became single — welcome to the club,” and revealed that he was going to name his award “Harry,” because he was “really excited about bringing [it] back to the States.” This was in reference to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step down as senior members of the royal family and spend more time in North America.

When presenting the Best Director nominees, Rebel Wilson took a dig at the lack of women directors nominated in the category. She said: “I look at the exceptional, daring talent nominated in this category and I don’t think I could do what they do. Honestly, I just don’t have the balls.”
