Scary films top Big Game weekend box office

Two new movies topped the weekend box office, earning big dollars in spite of the Super Bowl — Chronicle, a horror film about three friends who make a strange discovery in the woods, earned an estimated $22 million (all figures U.S.) and 4 out of 5 stars from Tribute users; while The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe proved that there is life after Harry Potter — it followed closely behind with $21 million ($7 million more than it was estimated to earn, making it CBS Film’s best opening to date) and 3.7 stars at Tribute. Ticket sales were actually up 37 per cent compared to the 2011 Super Bowl weekend. Last week’s top ranked movie The Grey, starring Liam Neeson, dropped two spots to third, taking in an additional $9.5 million and earning 3.5 stars at Tribute.ca. Drew Barrymore‘s Big Miracle debuted in fourth place, earning $8.5 million and 4 stars. Rounding out the top five was Underworld Awakening, earning an additional $5.6 million and 3 stars.
