As the long-awaited televised gala for the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards approaches, more prizes are being handed out.
The best in news and sports, documentary, lifestyle and reality and digital media were honored on Tuesday, while last night’s ceremony turned the spotlight on Canada’s top drama, children’s or youth and comedy and variety programming.
Of the 49 awards distributed at Toronto’s Westin Harbour Castle, the CBC miniseries The Book of Negroes walked away the big winner. It earned nine CSAs, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Lyriq Bent), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Series (Shailyn Pierre-Dixon) and Best Direction in a Dramatic Program or Limited Series (Clement Virgo).
The CBC hit comedy Schitt’s Creek also paddled its way to victory, as it was awarded Best Direction in a Comedy Program or Series (Paul Fox), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series (Chris Elliott) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role or Guest Role in a Comedic Series (Emily Hampshire).
Orphan Black, the popular sci-fi series, picked up five wins while the enduring Degrassi nabbed four.
The ceremony was hosted by comedian Steve Patterson.
