Simon Cowell blasts Christina Aguilera

By Alexandra Heilbron on February 10, 2011 | 20 Comments

Simon Cowell says when Christina Aguilera sang “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, it sounded like the noise a cat makes when someone sits on it. During an interview with Fox News, he was asked what he thought of Aguilera’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, during which she sang the wrong lyrics. He replied, “Well, I just heard it then and it sounded like a 100,000 people in a stadium had just sat on a cat,” he responded. When the clip began to play again, he begged, “No, don’t play me any more!” He continued: “Well look, obviously she is regretting it now. She must be. I’m listening to it here in London and it didn’t sound great to me. But to mess the words up? Not great. But I always say this, this is what happens when you perform in front of an audience – even someone as experienced as Christina. You can get it wrong.” Joan Rivers also had something to say about Aguilera’s mistake. “How stupid can you get?” Rivers told PopEater. “Christina must have been thinking about food, that’s why she forgot the words. She’s gotten so big. She looks like she could eat Lady GaGa. Great way to get rid of competition.”

Can’t say I’m a fan. Of Christina, I mean. I love Simon, he’s my guilty pleasure.

Simon is right that even experienced singers get nervous, especially for big events. Christina is very experienced but it even the very experienced have bad days. For Joan Rivers, however, that was uncalled for. Her performance has nothing to do with her weight and that comment was very rude.

Thats just rude what they said!she is having a hard time! and i feel very sad for her! really! come on America! u all sound stupid making fun of big stars! when they make one little mistake! who gives a shit! shes got a voice and we all know it! now stop talking about people! and from what i see half of America is FATTT! NOT JUST CHRISTINA!

Mistakes happen. Experienced or not. It was a live performance, it’s not like Christina could re-do it from the mistake like in the recording studio. Anyway, she did add her own style to the national anthem.
@hmmm: you are right. Joan Rivers is just being rude. To say, weight has affected Christina’s concentration is simply rude and riduculous!! J. Rivers thinks that she is so funny … but sometimes she comes across rude, ignorant and judgemental.

So what if it wasnt perfect. And seriously the weight comment is downright ignorant! Shes had a baby and is a mother, maybe her priorities are with her child.

I agree with Simon. Perhaps had she practiced during rehersal instead of just singing a couple of lines, she may not have messed up. I did not like the yelling rendition.

Joan Rivers is sad. It’s been a long time since I have had a laugh at her jokes. She is rude

Americans need to get over this; she made a little mistake – big whoop. Simon Cowell is just doing what he does best; being critical of those that put themselves out there.
And for Joan Rivers to comment at all is sickening. She looks like something Lady GaGa already ate! Blech!!

  9. Terry • February 10, 2011 @ 6:57 PM

I don’t think Christina looks especially fat. It’s stupid comments like that about weight that turns people in the spotlight anorexic.
A bad comedian is one who tries to be funny at the expense of the feelings of others. Joan Rivers never was very entertaining to me.

And Simon and Joan have the right to judge????? They should look in the mirror, before they had tons of money, to pay someone to “supposedly”, make them look good! Good for Christina! At least she was honest, after the fact! Give her a break! Obviously, she is struggling, now, after her divorce, as most women, end up doing, she will get it back! I have faith in her!:)

From what I saw as a replay on the news of Christina’s “flub-up”, I didn’t really notice it that much. Altho’, to the American public, it was probably considered “horrific”! They’ll ‘get over it’!! She’s a good singer, normally, but she definitely put a “spin” on the “Star Spangled Banner”. But then, she’s always been unique! As far as her weight is concerned, she’s just more “Voluptuous” now, probably so busy with her child that she’s maybe not eating as well s she should, or getting the chance to work-out so much! Anyhow, more power to her!(She is a single parent, after all.)

For someone who has had so much plastic surgery that they no longer look like themselves and their eyes look like little black marbles , Rivers should not thro’ stones. LOL
    hahahahahhahahhahahahahhahhahhahah

People seriously need to take a chill pill and back the fudge off. Christina is undeniably talented. She’s done this a thousand times, we know she knows the words. People make mistakes. Simple. End of.

As for Simon, I get that he’s blunt but he needs to learn how to be a bit more forgiving. Yes, they asked for his opinion and he has every right to give it, but isn’t it just common courtesy to ease off someone who’s already getting heat that’s essentially unnecessary?

And Joan Rivers, oh good god, I guess we should just let it slide, let anything she says slide right off because really, what would she do? She has nothing else to offer but her catty comments. Let her be the little kid in the corner shouting at the wall because no one else wants to play.

  14. Craig M • February 11, 2011 @ 11:52 AM

Wow!!….amazing that so many people would come to this woman’s defence. Hey you want to be in the spotlight and get all the praise then you need to take the heat when you f8ck up plain and simple. This is a woman who charges exorbinant amounts of money for her shows. You would think to charge money like that you’d have to be the ‘best’ at what you do. So she’s got the biggest spotlight in the world and she flubs the lines to her countries National Anthem. Pretty unforgiveable! Try practising once in a while instead of thinking you’re so good.

As for the comment from Joan Rivers, I have no problem with what she said…..Christina doesn’t look good and I don’t care if she did have a baby in the last two years. You want to live in the spotlight and be a big star, you need to take the hits when they come. You can’t handle it, then you need to get out of the oven and go find a 9-5 job. Joan Rivers takes more hits than anyone. she’s certainly entitled to give them out.

I think it’s funny. Who cares. Yeah she used to be hot, but I’m sure in some alternate reality so was Rita MacNeil lol. But over time and babies this happens. Her voice is still good, but clearly she messed up. She should have used the monitor and read the words with the bouncing ball on them.

Either way it was sad and embarrassing to see. But good on her for trying.

  16. margaret Levack • February 11, 2011 @ 9:04 PM

Christina practised the night before and was so sure of herself she stopped 1/2 way threw. doesn’t pay. Write the words on your hands. Uncalled for mistake.
    Simon is right.
Joan Rivers is a disgustingly ignorant female who has no room to talk. I will pay for the load of cement if she smiles and her face cracks. I will fill up the holes
Sit down Joan You’re a disgustingly old woman who is finished and to stupid to lie down. Get off the stage. You’re finished.

  17. Sherrie • February 12, 2011 @ 1:50 AM

Why do they have to scream when they’re singing, that’s not singing. Did you kill a cat or are you getting the gas out of you. Why wasn’t she practising before hand? She knew that she was going to be in front of an audience. Does she do the same thing (forget the words)when she does her live concerts?

Tired of hearing everyone bastardizing songs.

    Joan Rivers is funny.

  18. quinn • February 12, 2011 @ 7:28 PM

I think if you are going to sing the anthem, sing the anthem. Don’t make it sound like a whole new song. And try to keep it under ten minutes. One of the best anthem performances was Whitney Houstons back in the day. Just play Whitneys at all the events. That way no screw ups.

  19. gbh999 • February 14, 2011 @ 5:41 PM

Come on people… She had a chance to sing the national anthem in front of 100,000 people. Instead of singing the song the way it was supposed to be sung, she bastardized the song. Tried to be too cute. And she screwed up. PERIOD. No need to give me any excuses. Tell them to your Mom!!

As for Joan Rivers, or whoever that is inside of that hideous face, and body. What a wrech!! Give it up, old fool.
