Space Jam: A New Legacy debuts at top of weekend box office

The movie industry got a kick this weekend with the widespread reopening of theaters in Canada.

Following the release of Space Jam 25 years ago, Space Jam: A New Legacy hit theaters this weekend,  surprisingly taking the top spot away from last weekend’s big movie, Black Widow, which was predicted to remain on top for a second weekend. The animated live-action hybrid stars Lebron James, Don Cheadle and Zendaya, along with the original Looney Tunes characters from the first movie. The long-awaited follow-up earned $31.7 million, compared to the original’s $27.5 million back in 1996. The new film also premiered on HBO Max.

Marvel’s Black Widow debuted last weekend to register the largest opening since the pandemic began. Beating out former frontrunner F9 for the highest second weekend gross, the Avengers spin-off starring Scarlett Johansson earned second place this weekend, adding another $26.3 million for a grand total of $132 million.

The other new release this weekend was Escape Room: Tournament of ChampionsEarning mixed reviews, the sequel to 2019’s Escape Room features returning actors Taylor Russell and Logan Miller. While the first film had a pre-pandemic opening of $18.2 million, the edition scored lower, coming in at $8.8 million this weekend to take third place.

In fourth place, F9 grossed an additional $7.6 million this weekend. That brings the Fast and the Furious action film to $154 million over four weeks, making it only the second pandemic film to pass the $150 million mark behind Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II.

Rounding out the top five was Universal’s The Boss Baby: Family Business, which brought in $4.7 million this weekend. The animated sequel now has a total take of $44.6 million since it was released three weeks ago. ~Cassandra Coleman
