Star Trek’s Mr. Sulu character officially gay

Hikaru Sulu is gay.
No, not just George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu for nearly 30 years. Simon Pegg, who co-wrote Star Trek: Beyond, made the decision to make the character Hikaru Sulu a homosexual.
This was done as a tribute to George Takei, who since coming out as gay, has become an icon in the LGBTQ community.
John Cho plays Sulu in the new Star Trek film series. He says he “liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”
Sulu will be a father in a same-sex relationship. He and his partner will have a daughter.
You can see Mr. Sulu and the rest of the USS Enterprise crew in Star Trek Beyond in theaters July 22, 2016.

Netflix animated film Over the Moon is a mystical adventure about a young teenager learning the power of healing and letting go. The film is now on Netflix.
Definitely should have come out sooner, but considering the time period the original Star Trek was created, people were just not ready for that (for shame on all of us). It was enough that a black female character was in the original (kudos for that one).
Shout out to Simon Pegg for making Sulu a gay character. Star Trek is all about universality and inclusiveness, everyone working together. Everyone. About time.
Why??? George Takei himself is against the idea of Mr. Sulu being gay as STAR TREK creator Gene Roddenberry didn’t create a gay character in Hikaru Sulu. Some “tribute,” tribute…
I think this is a great step forward. Why not put a twist on old Gene’s story? Bring it into our century.
That clinches it. I’ll be giving this movie a pass.
I think there comes a time when films can be current and responsible to changing lifestyles
and tolerances. I embrace and applaud the idea to “boldly go” where no blockbuster film has gone before and take the initiative to make a subtle yet profound statement about the changing climate of our social mores. Well done. Lets continue to educate future generations.Acceptance and generosity are key to our survival as a tolerant human race.
So sad where the world is going. Everyone is confused.
