The Boss Baby wins at weekend box office

The Boss Baby has made his mark.

Based on an award-winning 2010 children’s book by Marla Frazee, The Boss Baby rolled out of the crib and into theaters this weekend to a $50.2 million showing. The 4.2 star-rated animated comedy features the voice of Alec Baldwin as a suit- and tie-wearing baby with a big plan. Steve Buscemi, Lisa Kudrow and Tobey Maguire also lend their vocal talents to the movie.

The Boss Baby ordered Beauty and the Beast to end its victory dance this weekend. However, Disney’s live-action remake of the tale as old as time continued to cast a spell on viewers by picking up $45.4 million at the box office and bringing its towering total to $395.5 million. In its third weekend of release, Bill Condon‘s 3.6-star rated picture with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens has now collected over $875 million globally.

The sci-fi action flick Ghost in the Shell debuted this weekend and cracked the top three with a $18.7 million effort. Starring Scarlett Johansson as a cyborg agent, the film, which has been bogged down by controversy over accusations of whitewashing, has some work to do if it aims to match its $110 million production budget. Currently, it sports 2.8 stars on this site.

The mighty morphin’ Power Rangers dropped from second to fourth place this weekend by grabbing $14.2 million. The sci-fi adventure film, which boasts a 3.8-star rating on this site and is the first big-budget superhero movie to profile an LGBTQ protagonist, has $65.1 million to its credit after two weekends in theaters.

In its fourth weekend on screens, Kong: Skull Island scored the fifth and final slot on this list with an $8.6 million take. With Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, the film now sits atop $147.8 million — almost on par with its $185 million budget. Our readers have given Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ picture 3.5 stars. ~Matthew Pariselli
