The Girl on the Train rides to the top at weekend box office

The Girl on the Train posterThe Girl on the Train, the big-screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins, sped away with a win this weekend with $24.7 million. The thriller, which stars Emily Blunt as a delusional woman whose voyeuristic habits turn her life upside down, is not only a hit with theater-goers, but also Tribute.ca users, who gave it a top-notch 4.5 stars.

Last weekend’s top flick, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, dropped down to second with $15 million. As of this weekend, the 3.2-star-rated flick about a magical school filled with magical children has earned just under $100 million at the global box office.  

Mark Wahlberg stars in Deepwater Horizon, which was another casualty of The Girl on the Train‘s first-place debut. The true-story action epic, rated 4.1 stars at Tribute.ca, also fell down one spot, adding $11.8 million to its $66 million worldwide haul.

Featuring an all-star cast including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan HawkeThe Magnificent Seven earned another $9.2 million in its third weekend in theaters. Now sitting at over $130 million around the world, the western reboot is rated 4.4 stars at Tribute.ca.

Storks and The Birth of a Nation fought it out for the coveted final spot in the box office top five, and the animated adventure beat out the debut period drama by just over $1 million. The 3.5-star-rated flick about a stork on a mission took home $8.5 million, making it the second movie this weekend to surpass the $100 million mark.
