Origins of Suicide Squad character – The Joker

We all know Heath Ledger’s Joker, and the upcoming Suicide Squad Joker played by Jared Leto. But did you know that Mark Hamill, a.k.a. Luke Skywalker, has been the voice of the Joker for over 20 years? Some of you readers may not even be old enough to remember Jack Nicholson’s Joker.
The Joker’s long and colored history goes all the way back to the 1920s. This iconic role has been played by many different actors, and all of them have brought something unique to the role.
Cesar Romero in the Batman TV series brought an innocent sense of fun, Jack Nicholson brought a contemplative three-dimensional approach, Mark Hamill perfected the voice and Heath Ledger amalgamated all of that and took what was once considered a silly clown for children into an Academy Award-winning performance.
Read on to find out how history tends to repeat itself. You might be surprised to find out that not all of these casting decisions were as initially well received as they are now.

I absolutely loved Jack Nicholson’s Joker!
How can the Joker’s history date back to the 1920’s when the Batman (at the time it was Bat-Man) comic was not around in the 1920’s?
I’m curious about how Jered Leto will do in the role. His laugh in the background of the trailers is getting to me. Sounds pretty decent.

I appreciate the comment. You really know your Batman! Here’s why I said the Joker has been around since the 1920s. You can see that if you click through to the rest of the story.
The Joker and his trademark grin were largely inspired by the 1928 movie The Man Who Laughs. Here’s a quote from my story on the Joker.
“The Joker first appeared in the Batman comics in 1940. D.C. comic icons Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson were inspired by The Joker playing card found in most playing card decks. They combined the playing card design with Gwynplaine from the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs. Gwynplaine is a man whose face is stuck in a permanent grin. He is considered so ugly that no woman wants him.”

@ Maddie, would you have prefered that the director of the upcoming movie Suicide Squad pick an actor that was less attractive than Jared Leto. Your comment suggests that Jared Leto does not fit the role of the latest Joker because he is too good looking to play him.
Sorry but the Elephant man was unavailable when it came to the casting call for the role of the Joker.
I think that if Mark Hamill who is in his late 60’s were 20 years younger, he might be able to play the role of the Joker, since he contributed his voice acting skills as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series.
In my opinion, the best representation of the Joker came with the first Batman movie, where Jack Nicholson portrayed him really well.
Also, who could forget the outstanding performance of Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight Returns. Heath’s performance of the clown prince of crime was spot on!
Given what I have seen of the available trailers for the Suicide Squad movie and hearing Jared’s voice and maniacal laughter in his portrayal of the Joker, I am convinced that the director made a good decsion when casting him for the role and I can’t wait to see the movie on August 05, 2016.
