The King’s Speech wins four Oscars

There were no surprise winners at the Academy Awards last night, as The King’s Speech took home Best Picture and its star, Colin Firth, won Best Actor. It also won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Natalie Portman won Best Actress for Black Swan and the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards went to The Fighter co-stars — Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. It became clear during Leo’s acceptance speech that the Oscars are one of the only shows not on time delay when she dropped the F-bomb. Christian Bale got laughs when he promised not to drop an F-bomb as well, saying he’d already done that elsewhere (referring to the infamous tape in which he berated a film crew member for ruining a scene) and though for a moment he seemed to forget his wife’s name, he was just overcome by emotion at that point in his speech, explaining, “I didn’t think I would be like this.” One of the highlights of the show was Kirk Douglas, 95, who suffered a stroke in 1995 and has received extensive speech therapy. He read out the Supporting Best Actress nominees, then twice delayed giving the winner’s name, instead retelling a memory: “You know, I will never forget this moment…” Leo said afterwards, “He was doing us all this huge favor, because the longer he strung it out, the calmer I got to be.”

The hosting was bad, but there were some funny parts and oddly the 95 year old Douglas stole the show. Dirty ol man lol. All-in-all it was not painful to watch but it was nice to hear some of the speeches that will forever go down in history. I think the people who won actually deserved it this time and the movies who won for their respective artistry whether it was best pic to costume design, I think was actually pretty accurate.
As a performance, I agree that Colin Firth deserved the Oscar but as a movie, I though The Social Network and True Grit were better. I would have liked to see an upset like last year’s Hurt Locker when people though Avatar would win. Since Jeff Bridges won last year, I didn’t expect him to win but he would have been deserving as well. All nominees were deserving but surprises and upsets always make for a good show.
Exept maybe for Christian Bale and Natalie Portman, there was no contest there, they were carved in stone a long time ago.
I found the show quite boring this year but agree with you both on many of your points. There were no surprises and all were deserving of their wins. I do agree on the King’s Speech taking best picture though I thoroughly enjoyed Social Network, True Grit and The Fighter as well.
I must say I thought Leo’s “slip” was accidentally on purpose and not amusing at all…the only amusing thing about her was her outfit…
Firth and Portman’s acceptance speeches on the other hand, pure class…

She then proceeded to post an image of the receipt on her facebook (couldn that get her fired?). and provide her friends with the guy name (Andrew Meyer), contact info, picture and link to his facebook. apparently a few innocent Andrew Meyers have been wrongfully harassed.
