The Proposal DVD review – 5/5 stars

the_proposalThe Proposal stars Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate, a high powered NYC book editor whose appearance causes her staff to run in the opposite direction. Her assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), has worked for Margaret for three stress-filled years. He considers her a “terrorist” and when he knows she’s about to walk through the office, he sends a warning IM that reads: “The Witch is on her broom!” Margaret, who’s Canadian, is such a busy executive that she neglects to renew her working visa, and is informed by her bosses that she’s about to be deported. Thinkly quickly, she announces she’s engaged — to Andrew. Andrew is present when she gives her bosses the surprising news, and Ryan Reynolds’ reaction is priceless. I laughed out loud innumerable times through this film — Bullock, Reynolds and Betty White as Reynolds’ “Grammy” are at the top of their form, each one eliciting belly laughs. To prove to the U.S. Government that their engagement is genuine, Margaret accompanies Andrew to his childhood home in Sitka, Alaska, where they announce their upcoming nuptials to his family.

DVD extras include an alternate ending, which is also good, though not as good as the one they actually went with; two deleted scenes; and an outtake reel.  But the funniest stuff is in the film itself, which aside from a mildy humorous scene involving a pudgy, middle-aged male stripper (who holds several other odd jobs) and one scene in which Margaret, who was having a shower, and Andrew, about to have a shower, accidently wind up nude in the same room (nothing is shown), the movie is suitable for all ages.

Five out of five stars
