The 90th Academy Awards nominees were announced this morning. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water leads the pack with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and acting nods for Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins. Another strong contender that has been scooping awards this season is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. It received seven nominations. including Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Supporting Actor nominations for Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. Click here to read our movie review.
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk scored eight nominations while fan favorites Get Out and Lady Bird also earned their place on the list, with five nominations each. After notably being snubbed at the Golden Globes, Greta Gerwig earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Director for her debut film. She becomes the fifth female director nominated by the Academy in the 90-year history. The previous female director who was nominated and won was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010.
James Franco, who won a Golden Globe Award for his role in The Disaster Artist, failed to earn a nomination following the multiple assault allegations against him.
The 90th Annual Academy Awards will take place on March 4 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host. ~Marriska Fernandes
