In the Hallmark Channel movie The Sweeter Side of Life, now available on DVD from TVA films, Desiree Harper (Kathryn Morris) is a pampered Manhattan wife who loves shopping and gossiping with her equally wealthy friends. Things don’t exactly go as planned when her husband, a successful plastic surgeon, announces he is leaving her for his much-younger acupuncturist and requests a divorce. To add to her misery, the pre-nup clause in their contract leaves her penniless and her rich friends shun her. Desiree has no choice but to move in with her father, who lives in New Jersey.

Desiree begins to work for her father’s bakery, which is having financial difficulties. Although she feels embarrassed at first by her new situation in life, she gradually warms to the townspeople she meets and finds herself investing time in her relationship with her father. She even comes up with a gourmet cupcake she calls “Paddy cakes,” which brings new life to the bakery, bringing in much-needed revenue. When a large company wants to purchase the rights to her pastry invention, she finds herself eager for a chance to return to her high society life. Meanwhile, a new man enters Desiree’s life, but she’s “once bitten, twice shy” and turns him down. As Desiree gets a fresh outlook on life, will it be enough to make her believe in love again? Directed by Michael Damian, this is a fun, family-friendly DVD that will make a great choice for a movie night at home. Other films releasing this week on DVD include: Star Trek Into Darkness, Sharknado, Love is All You Need and The Reluctant Fundamentalist. ~Marriska Fernandes
