Tom Hardy has been announced as the actor to don the rose tinted glasses of Elton John in a planned biopic of the musician in Rocketman. The Rocket Pictures production will be helmed by Michael Gracey, who also directs Hugh Jackman in the upcoming The Greatest Showman on Earth, with an original screenplay provided by Billy Elliot scribe Lee Hall. Rocket Pictures CEO Steven Hamilton revered in the casting of Hardy. “Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life,” he said. “We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board, and equally excited to be in the hands of Peter Schlessel and the entire Focus Features team.” Hardy takes the role after star-turning performances in blockbusters The Dark Knight Rises and Inception, as well as a critically acclaimed turn as the titular character in Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2008 drama Bronson. The announcement comes after a long-running process of casting Elton John, who will re-record his hit songs to match the emotional moments of the upcoming biopic. He previously admitted Justin Timberlake was his first choice for the role. “I’ve got a wish list of people,” he told the LA Times. “No. 1 on my wish list is Justin Timberlake, because he played me before in a David LaChapelle video and was superb.” The biopic will follow Elton John’s journey from young piano prodigy to world renowned musician and is scheduled to begin shooting in fall 2014.
