TV show investigated after horse deaths

Two episodes of HBO’s new series Luck, set in the world of horse racing, did not receive the disclaimer “No animals were harmed during the filming of this program” from the American Humane Association, because two horses were killed in separate incidents. Both suffered broken legs after falling during race sequences and were subsequently euthanized. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) says they tried to reach out to Luck‘s producers before filming began to advise them about safety procedures, but were ignored. They wrote on their site: “Perhaps if producers had considered the proved safety protocols that we would have suggested, these horses would still be alive.” It appears that PETA’s plea has not fallen on deaf ears. The AHA responded, saying, “Following the second incident, American Humane Association insisted that production be suspended and imposed additional stringent soundness protocols. These included, but were not limited to, daily training and care records, microchips in all of the horses, hiring an additional veterinarian to do the comprehensive soundness checks at the top of the day, and radiographs of the legs of all horses being considered for use on the show. We insisted that these protocols be in place before any filming could resume. HBO agreed to all our requests and worked collaboratively regarding these many additional safety guidelines and precautions, and resumed filming once all of the horses in the show stable were radiographed and those deemed at risk were pulled.”

It’s sad that this all could have possibly been avoided from the get go, yet once again cash/greed seems to be the culprit here.
