Tyson’s daughter dies in treadmill tragedy

By Paul on May 29, 2009 | 51 Comments

Mike TysonFormer boxing champion Mike Tyson’s four-year-old daughter has died after accidentally strangling herself on a treadmill. Exodus Tyson was found hanging from a cord dangling from the exercise machine at her home in Phoenix, Arizona.
She was rushed to hospital in an “extremely critical condition” and put on a life support machine but pronounced dead on Tuesday at noon local time.
Police say Exodus was playing on the treadmill when her head apparently slipped inside a cord hanging under the console. Her seven-year-old brother found her.
In a statement, the Tyson family said: “There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. “We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”
Mike Tyson, who makes an appearance in The Hangover and stars in Tyson, a documentary examining his life, has yet to make a statement.

My heart goes out to Mike Tyson and his family….i cant beleive something so tragic could happen to such a little girl…my heart goes out.

  3. Andy • May 29, 2009 @ 4:06 PM

Rest in peace Exodus. My sincere condolences to the Tyson family

  4. tributegirl • May 29, 2009 @ 4:21 PM

That dear little girl. What a shame.

  5. Mary • May 29, 2009 @ 8:01 PM

How terrible for the family. Such a tragedy.I do hope her brother will get through this.

  6. Carol • May 29, 2009 @ 9:58 PM

I hope so too, Mary. It’s hard enough as an adult to move on, but for young children, how do they deal with such a strong loss. They don’t have the capability to understand the situation fully.
I feel so bad, words cannot describe. I hope they all, together and independently, go for counselling asap.

  7. mandee • May 30, 2009 @ 10:04 AM

thats a good idea carol. (the counselling). this is such heart breaking news. i have my suspicions though. rest in peace. :*(

  8. moondog • May 30, 2009 @ 12:32 PM

    what r ur suspicions sherlock?

  9. mandee • May 30, 2009 @ 2:08 PM

perhaps when you spell properly and dont act so rude towards me, i will tell you. until then, feel free to use your imagination. 🙂

    moondog on May 30, 2009 12:32 PM

    okay, got a chuckle there.

  11. Carol • May 30, 2009 @ 2:39 PM

seriously though, what are your suspicions? MIke Tyson does not have a great history, but I don’t think he’d hurt his own child. Is that what you are thinking? I’m not suggesting this is your thought, but somewhere you must be thinking of something foul play or along that line.

  12. mandee • May 30, 2009 @ 2:48 PM

i dont think HE did it. i was told he doesnt even live with the little girl and her mother? im trying to figure out how its possible for a little girl to be “hanging from a cord dangling from the exercise machine” without someone hearing ANYTHING. also, i dont understand how she can somehow get a cord THAT wrapped around her neck that it would strangle her. if she fell against it (anyone that has a tredmill would probably assume this) as soon as she fell against the cord, it would pull from the machine. the cord i am thinking of, you attach to your clothing so that if you dont keep up with the machine it pulls it out of the machine and shuts the machine off. we have a tredmill, so i am aware of how easily the cord comes out and i really cant believe that falling against it somehow wrapped so tightly around her neck that she couldnt get out, nor do i believe it would have been a strong enough cord to stay in the machine and support her weight. it sounds kind of fishy to me.

  13. Nancy • May 30, 2009 @ 3:05 PM

That’s what I thought of right away too mandee, when I first heard of this childs death. The article I had read said that Mike didn’t live with them and that he was in Las Vegas at the time, the mother was supposedly cleaning the house and the son found the girl with the cord of the treadmill around her neck and got his mom, who performed CPR on her. I have a treadmill myself and I didn’t take it to be the cord that you clip to your clothing…the one that only holds on to the machine by a magnet, I understood it to be the power cord. On my machine, the power cord is not very long at all, so unless they had the machine right up to the plug in where there would be alot of slack in the cord. I do recall the article saying though, that the cord had become like a noose. Above, it says “Police say Exodus was playing on the treadmill when her head apparently slipped inside a cord hanging under the console”…so, maybe they had the slack of the cord rolled up hanging under there..?? Maybe they were using an extension cord. All I know is that the cord on mine is maybe 4 feet long…tops!

  14. moondog • May 30, 2009 @ 3:16 PM

    ‘tredmill’ learn to spell idjit!

  15. mandee • May 30, 2009 @ 4:57 PM

well, i was also wondering about that. if its the cord that plugs into the wall, i still dont understand how she could have fallen and had it become like a noose and STILL be “hanging”. my power cord is really really close to the floor, so wouldnt she have just fallen onto the floor?

  16. Toothfairy • May 30, 2009 @ 5:31 PM

GET A LIFE !! Mike Tyson did not kill his own little girl. Whatever you think of him, that is too way out to even suggest.
Don’t let that large imagination run away with you. Come down from off your cloud.

  17. mandee • May 30, 2009 @ 5:43 PM

maybe you should get some anger management classes? and also, you should probably learn to read ALL the comments before you have a hissy fit. i clearly said, and so did nancy, that we were both well aware of the fact that mike tyson was not even near the house the child was in when she died. go back to the top and read EVERYTHING that was said, and then comment.

  18. Carol • May 30, 2009 @ 6:48 PM

Ok, it said she was playing on the treadmill, it wasn’t necessarily on. It’s sad by all accounts, and unfortunately it doesnt take much. Kid can get their heads anywhere…how many have gotten seriously stuck in the stair rungs or chairs? No one ever knows how they did it, but it happens, and the vinyl blinds, how many kids were unfortunate and got tangled up in those. I know what you are saying, Nancy & Mandee, because I have a treadmill too, but I’m sure in their house, with their riches, they probably have some very sophisticated equipment. He would need top of the line, probably with stereo hookup, tv hookup, etc. And when kids get quiet, that is when they really need to be watched sometimes.
I think it just comes down to an extremely unfortunate accident.

  19. tributegirl • May 30, 2009 @ 8:54 PM

Yeah, I have to agree, Carol, I really don’t think there was anything sinister here, I think it was just one of those horrible, horrible things that sometimes happens. Also, I really hope they get some counselling for the boy, because I’m sure he must be quite traumatized by what he saw.

  20. mandee • May 30, 2009 @ 9:03 PM

im really hoping that the 2 of you are right. the world is getting soo out of control with all these children being abducted and murdered, you shouldnt HAVE to watch out for the parents too.

  21. tributegirl • May 30, 2009 @ 9:54 PM

Agreed, but I really don’t think it was murder. And like Carol said, Mike Tyson would have to have the most fanciest, most expensive treadmill on the market, and probably did have it hooked up to a tv, stereo system, etc, there could have easily been wires or cords where there shouldn’t have been.

  22. Coop • May 30, 2009 @ 10:33 PM

Sadly these kind of tragic accidents occur all the time without so much as a whimper of warning. There is nothing sinister at work here,my heart goes out to the family. There can be no greater anguish than burying your own child,a few of you should think about that instead of trying to play god-damn CSI.

  23. Nancy • May 30, 2009 @ 10:36 PM

Relax there Coop! We’re not “trying to play god-damn” anything!

  24. Coop • May 30, 2009 @ 11:00 PM

Aah Nancy,I knew it wouldn’t take long for you to reveal yourself as one on of the “few” I was referring to.Once again your misguided observations reveal your true ignorance about pretty much everything.I know you can’t resist to reply(your so easy)so take it away.Oh,and forgive me if I don’t reply right away as I’m off out as I have a life to lead something I’m sure you’d know nothing about.

  25. Nancy • May 30, 2009 @ 11:12 PM

“misguided observations”? Please fill me in on how I was “misguided” there Coop.

As for you having a life…that’s great! I have a life with kids…and they are in bed so I’m not going out anywhere. I can’t believe you’re sitting here on Tribute, bragging about your so-called “life” and how you have one but I don’t, condemning me for being on Tribute…??? Thanks for your concern though, demigod.

Oh, and I’m not “easy”, hahaha!

  26. Carol • May 31, 2009 @ 9:17 AM

Nancy, you are right. Man, this guy sounds like your other “enemy” who has been MIA, but that’s okay. Maybe they are one & the same? I don’t see anyone playing CSI, and I know you weren’t referring to me Coop. I’m just saying that so much happens in the media that when something bad happens, people tend to associate with other things, like Mike Tyson’s bad behaviour in the past, Jon-Benet’s death (at her family’s hands in my opinion) etc. I did not think any of this, I think it is an accident. But in general, people need to compare to make sense of things, and sometimes they do reach, but so what? It’s all about our individual opinions here.

  27. tributegirl • May 31, 2009 @ 10:50 AM

Nancy, that was Coop, not demigod.

  28. Nancy • May 31, 2009 @ 2:20 PM

Oh…..riiiight! Well, wonder what demigod thinks? Oh, I know! He’s probably thinking “How the f@ck did Nancy know that Coop is me?” 😉

  29. Carol • May 31, 2009 @ 5:28 PM

Coop is Demi or Coop is Joanne?

  30. moondog • May 31, 2009 @ 5:52 PM

    what? r u an idjit 2?

  31. Nancy • May 31, 2009 @ 6:06 PM

Carol, I believe Coop and demigod are one in the same…and lord only knows if any other names are involved.

  32. Nancy • May 31, 2009 @ 6:08 PM

And no, I’m not an “idjit” and I don’t believe Carol or mandee are either. R u? LOL. 😉

  33. Jo-Anne • May 31, 2009 @ 6:59 PM

Hey Carol, now I’m the “MIA enemy”? ha ha

  34. Carol • May 31, 2009 @ 7:44 PM

Hey Jo-Jo, been pretty quiet here without you…lol

  35. Jo-Anne • May 31, 2009 @ 8:18 PM

ha ha Carol, yes, I am sure one person is heartbroken…

Tend to see sometimes the same old arguments on here and don’t have the interest…also, been busy scouting out Springsteen concerts worldwide…ha ha

    have a great evening…

  36. Nancy • May 31, 2009 @ 8:36 PM

    “Heartbroken”? Uh….not quite! LMAO.

And, don’t you mean “tend to ’cause’ the same old arguments on here”? I mean, you’re gone for a day or two and first thing as soon as you come back, you start with “I am sure one person is heartbroken” and then b!tch and whine that the same old arguments don’t interest you. Then stop causing them! Plain and simple.

  37. demigod • May 31, 2009 @ 8:37 PM

Nancy on May 31, 2009 6:06 PM Carol, I believe Coop and demigod are one in the sameand lord only knows if any other names are involved.

    Are you off your rocker???

  38. Jo-Anne • May 31, 2009 @ 8:41 PM

ha ha see what I’m talking about? my point well illustrated, always…plain and simple

you’re just no challenge anymore, Nance…the bait is not only snapped up..it’s snapped up in like a millisecond…

    gulp….

  39. mandee • May 31, 2009 @ 8:45 PM

man, lol about ALL of you. you guys are great 🙂

  40. Nancy • May 31, 2009 @ 8:55 PM

You see deimgod, the longer your post (on the Chris Brown article), the more people get to see your “style” of writing. I could be wrong of course, but I doubt it. You and Coop were commenting in the same time frame and both don’t leave spaces after your commas and periods. Like I said, I could be wrong but I don’t think so. It’s no big deal, I just think that people can say what they need to say all under one name, that’s all. Of course I could use a sh!tload of different names on here too…maybe I should, then people won’t say “Oh, I have a life and you don’t”…I’ll just use 10 different names instead…seems to be the “in” thing on here, right? 😛

  41. demigod • May 31, 2009 @ 9:19 PM

    Nancy on May 31, 2009 8:55 PM

I’m dropping this..you’re not even worth a response.

  42. Carol • June 1, 2009 @ 8:01 PM

It’s true, if you believe in your comments, you shouldn’t need a bunch of alias’s

  43. Coop • June 1, 2009 @ 9:24 PM

Nancy your hilarious!!Thank you for proving my ‘misguided” point perfectly!
Demigod, you gotta see the humour in this!!!!!!

  44. demigod • June 2, 2009 @ 5:21 AM

I do..we don’t laugh with her, but at her 🙂

  45. Nancy • June 2, 2009 @ 9:21 AM

    “I do..we don’t laugh with her, but at her 😀 ”

    “We”?

Oh, you mean all your aliases!!

  46. Jo-Anne • June 2, 2009 @ 10:07 AM

sad part is, even all your aliases, Nance, are chuckling at you too….

  47. Nancy • June 2, 2009 @ 10:48 AM

Once again Jo-Anne, read the posts because you come in in the middle of a conversation that doesn’t involve your ugly mug and you write comments that make no sense….”I” have no aliases…I was speaking of demigod. See, you whine of the “same old arguments” on here. Always whining, whining, whining about “Nancy”…why do you involve yourself then, instigator? 😛

  48. Jo-Anne • June 2, 2009 @ 1:32 PM

    correction….I’m not whining Nancy…actually I’m one of the chucklers…..

  49. Nancy • June 2, 2009 @ 4:24 PM

Actually, you are a “whiner” and you can chuckle all you want, it still makes no difference to anyone…especially to me.

  50. Jo-Anne • June 2, 2009 @ 4:26 PM

    chuckle

  51. Jo-Anne • June 2, 2009 @ 4:26 PM

    oops
