If you’re in the mood for a healthy dose of irony sprinkled with teen friendship and a toss of violence, then here’s an original treat for you. Violet & Daisy follows the story of two teenage girls, played by Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan, who not only share a room, but a love for all things pop culture and fashion. But don’t be deceived by the floral names and innocent eyes. The irony comes into play when the opening scene shows the girls dressed as nuns and delivering pizzas – yes, you read that right. To add to this humor, the pizzas are just a cover for the weapons they’re carrying for a bloodbath that soon follows. This innocent bubblegum-chewing duo are trained assassins. They then agree to take one last job for a Barbie Sunday dress. Seriously. When they show up to kill an unnamed victim, played by James Gandolfini, they are disturbed with the idea that he is ready for his death and simply welcomes them with cookies. Yup, the best oatmeal cookies. While contemplating how and when to kill their friendly victim, a few unexpected guests show up and the film takes a few twists and turns along the way.
The film feels as if it were spun from a Quentin Tarantino movie with a play at irony and humor. The movie marks Academy Award-winner Geoffrey Fletcher’s (he won for the Precious screenplay) directorial debut. It’s a commendable attempt at directing as the dark, violent yet funny film is an original treat. Gandolfini does a brilliant portrayal of a distraught father who treats both girls as if they were his own. Alexis Bledel, who previously played perfect child Rory Gilmore in the TV series Gilmore Girls, is seen in a very different light when she steps in to the character of Violet. She puts on a brave face although she is secretly terrified. For her part, Saoirse Ronan plays, quite brilliantly, a hit-girl who’s unsure of her profession and is too afraid to confide in her best friend. At times, the movie does move away from the storyline and loses the interest of the audience. Nevertheless, give the film a chance – the deadpan humor and irony will make it worthwhile. I want to see this one. And why is Alexis Bledel constantly associated with her Gilmore Girls role. She’s done a number of things since then, most notably a role on Mad Men. She’s grown up quite a bit since playing Rory Gilmore.
