What to watch at home this week – August 8 to 13

Downton Abbey: A New Era – Violet (Maggie Smith) inherits a villa in the South of France and decides to leave it to Sybil and Tom’s daughter Sibbie. Meanwhile, a filmmaker (Hugh Dancy) gets permission from Mary (Michelle Dockery) to shoot a moving picture at Downton Abbey. Available August 9 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Raquel Cassidy (Miss Baxter) and Jim Carter (Mr. Carson) chat about how thrilled they were not just to reprise their roles in Downton Abbey: A New Era, but to get out of the house when pandemic restrictions were finally lifted. Jim reveals that most of their scenes were filmed in sunny France, while other main cast members were in England, where it was raining. Raquel talks about coming to Toronto for the Canadian premiere, saying the fans were really enthusiastic and it was like a big party.

In St. Mary church in Suffolk, England where Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton) were married in Downton Abbey: A New Era, costume designer Anna Robbins chats with us about how much clothing had changed in the one year since the previous Downton Abbey movie was set, and discusses which characters she likes to design for most and why.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – After settling in Green Hills, Sonic (voice of Ben Schwartz) is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns with a new partner, Knuckles (voice of Idris Elba), in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Available August 9 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Secret Headquarters – Charlie Kincaid’s (Walker Scobell) father, Jack (Owen Wilson), always has an excuse for not being around. When Jack gets an urgent call from work and has to leave, Charlie invites his friends over. They discover a secret underground headquarters, which leads them to believe Charlie’s father might have a secret double life. Debuts August 12 on Paramount+.

Locke & Key: Season 3 – In the thrilling final chapter of the series, Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott) comes across a time-travel key that he finds in a grandfather clock. A new villain (Kevin Durand) is introduced and when he tries to take possession of the keys for himself, it’s up to Bode and his siblings (Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones) to defend the keys and their power. Debuts August 10 on Netflix.

A League of Their Own – In 1943, Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson) drops everything to travel to Chicago to try out for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. There, she meets Greta Gill (D’Arcy Carden) and Jo De Luca (Melanie Field). When local player Max Chapman (Chanté Adams) shows up to the tryouts, she’s turned away because she’s Black, even though she’s one of the best pitchers they could ever find. Max has to come up with a new way to pursue her dream. Debuts August 12 on Prime Video.

Never Have I Ever: Season 3 – Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her friends may finally be single no more. But they’re about to learn that relationships come with a lot of self-discovery — and all the drama. Debuts August 12 on Netflix.

Day Shift – Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) is a hard working blue collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires as part of an international Union of vampire hunters. Debuts August 12 on Netflix.
