What’s new on Netflix – February 2017

Netflix February 2017In February, there’s a slew of critically acclaimed gems, award-winning favorites and juicy new Netflix Originals waiting to be binged.

There’s also a selection of cheesy rom-coms for the couples and if you’re allergic to the cheesiness, there’s always a gory-filled horror to soothe your aching soul.

Netflix Originals
Remember Archie and the gang? Yes, those very comics we loved and adored. Now, our favorite characters are on the small screen. Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, Reggie Mantle and more come together in RiverdaleThis small town has a few dark secrets and you can join them starting February 3rd as new episodes hit the streaming site. Another original to feast on is the 11-episode series Santa Clarita Diet, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant.

Heart and Humor
Three words: Meryl Streep musical. Disney’s Into the Woods is based on the hit Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim. A baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) learn they’ve been cursed by a witch (Streep) into being childless. The film introduces a variety of characters from the Grimm fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) and Cinderella (Anna Kendrick). Did I say humor? Well, there’s dark humor in this one.

Next up is Disney’s The BFG based on the novel by Roald Dahl. A tale with a lot of heart, the film revolves around an orphan girl named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) and her friendship with The Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance).

Also on the (greeting) cards is the late Garry Marshall‘s Mother’s Day, a light-hearted comedy completely perfect for a celebration of mothers everywhere. And it’s got cheeky one-liners that are sure to get you ROFL-ing.

Zac Efron. Single or not, he brings his talent (and bare chest) to the big screen with his comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, also starring Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. If you didn’t get enough of that, his six pack abs make another appearance in 17 Again, which gives this poster child a second shot at life.

Adrenaline-Pumping Picks
Chris Hemsworth. Need I continue? Rush is set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing and tells the true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). Also, Liam Neeson is back with another action thriller in Run All Night

Lil’ bit of Love
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, there are a bunch of options for the couples. Cozy up to Ryan Gosling (and your bae!) as he proves to be swoon-worthy in The Notebook. If your relationship is complicated, Just Friends might just be the one (no pun intended).

Horror-ific
Bad breakup? Single again? Missing the goosebumps thanks to forever-alone February? These chock full of horror-ific finds are a substitute to keep you awake at night. Scream 4 will be streaming this month along with the eerie Silent Hill.

There’s also no shortage of thrillers. Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman) was beaten nearly to death in a hotel room. She has no memory of the incident and every day for the last ten years she wakes up with no memory of the day before. Her husband reminds her each day, but he is keeping things from her. Can she trust him? Watch Before I Go to Sleep to find out.

Until next month, have a safe and sound streamfest February! ~Marriska Fernandes
