William Shatner, best known for playing Capt. Kirk in the original Star Trek television series and movies, has been chosen to host this year’s Genie Awards. Born and raised in Montreal, Shatner has also starred in the TV series T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal, and can currently be seen in the CBS sitcom $#*! My Dad Says. He says, “I’m so looking forward to coming to Canada as the host of the 31st annual Genie Awards and seeing a lot of my old friends,” said Shatner. “Unfortunately, most of them are dead of old age.” Sara Morton, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, said in a statement: “William Shatner is a beloved icon and a proud Canadian. We are absolutely thrilled that Mr. Shatner will be joining us at the Genie Awards to honour our country’s talent and to celebrate a phenomenal year in Canadian film.” Twilight‘s Rachelle Lefevre, who also starred in the Genie-nominated film Barney’s Version, will participate in the ceremony as the voice of the Genies. The Genie Awards ceremony, which celebrate the best in Canadian cinema, will be broadcast live March 10th from Ottawa on CBC. Please check out Tribute’s Genies page, which includes a full list of nominees.
