Women take center stage at Grammys 2019 – winners list

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards took place last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to honor the biggest artists in music. This year, it was truly a celebration of female artists as Cardi B, Alicia Keys, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Lady Gaga, Kacey Musgraves and many more were part of a memorable Grammys.

The 15-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys played host (the show’s first female host in 14 years), and opened her monologue by bringing Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Jada Pinkett Smith to the stage. It was a winning moment of female solidarity. Together they asked, “Who run the world?” (Girls!), referring to Beyoncé’s iconic song, “Run the World.”

Cardi B won Best Rap Album for Invasion of Privacy, making Grammys history as the first solo female rapper to win in this category. She also performed her sizzling “Money” number on stage. Drake made a surprise appearance when he showed up to collect a Grammy for Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan.”

The big winner of the night was Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover) who won Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “This is America.” He also made history as the first hip-hop artist to win these coveted awards. Kacey Musgraves took home Album of the Year for Golden Hour.

As usual, there were power-packed performances to entertain the crowd. Lady Gaga sang her popular song “Shallow,” after winning the Best Pop Duo performance award for the song — a duet with Bradley Cooper from the movie A Star is Born.

A tribute to Dolly Parton was another memorable musical moment as Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves joined to honor her. Diana Ross looked ravishing as she celebrated her 75th birthday and even sang two songs, wowing the audience.

Miley Cyrus and Shawn Mendes were on fire as they performed his song, “In My Blood,” while Alicia Keys played TWO pianos to woo us with her favorite melodies. Enough said.

Ariana Grande won her first Grammy award for best pop vocal album for Sweetener, but was a no-show as she had decided to skip the show due to a disagreement with the producers as to which songs she would perform for the ceremony.

The night was basically summed up in one brilliant quip from Dua Lipa, who won Best New Artist. Accepting her award she said: “I guess this year we’ve really stepped up!” It’s a clear dig at last year’s controversy when Grammy president Neil Portnow suggested women in music needed to “step up.” And step up they did. ~Marriska Fernandes
