Jack Klugman’s son slams Cory Monteith’s Emmys tribute

By Tribute on September 23, 2013 | 9 Comments

Every year, award shows pay tribute to those who passed away in the past year. The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards that took place on Sunday were no different. It included a standalone tribute to the late Cory Monteith who, at the age of 31, died of a toxic combination of heroin and alcohol in July. He starred as Finn Hudson on the hit Fox television series Glee, and the tribute, provided by Jane Lynch, garnered an emotive response. Not everyone agreed with this particular tribute, however, as Adam Klugman argued it mocked the achievements of his father, Jack Klugman. “I think it’s criminal,” Adam told the Associated Press days before the awards ceremony. “My dad was at the inception of  television and helped build it in the early days. It’s an insult, and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture  that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow  demographic,” Adam continued. “What about the people who should be introduced to  somebody like my father? I don’t mean to say anything disparaging about Cory,  but he was a kid who had won no Emmys, and it was a self-induced tragedy.” Jack Klugman was a versatile actor, working in stage, film, and television. He was a three-time Emmy winner, and is best known for his portrayal of Oscar Madison in the ABC sitcom The Odd Couple that ran from 1970 till 1975. He died aged 90 in December 2012. ~Raj-Kabir Birk

he makes very valid and good points. alot of ppl will say it’s insensitive, but can anyone honestly say in terms of factual credence that he’s wrong? probably not.

I agree with him. People around me keep saying but cory was so talented (local boy), but really, he did it to himself yet he gets honoured for a small body of work and what he ‘could’ have been? Maybe he is like a terrible artist who dies and soon his work will be worth millions??? After glee he could have faded into oblivion or more drugs anyway.

I believe he is correct. Not having seen this I have no idea how it was handled, however if they turned it into a big public service announcement about how stupidity can take down anyone, then by all means single out this guys death and make an example of him.

First of all, whether or not he’d won an Emmy is irrelevant. Tribute is not owed because it fits requirements, it is felt. And anyways, he was loved and respected, and part of an Emmy nominated show. And regarding self-infliction, I don’t see how that would make him undeserving. He was troubled yes, but he was a human being who made a living in this industry and who was known for being smart, hard working and kind. Should we never pay tribute to Marilyn Monroe, Ernest Hemingway, James Dean, Heath Ledger, Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Jimi Hendrix…. because they had a hand in their own deaths? I think not.

I agree with Maxime on this one. You take away this Tribute to Cory, you might as well never speak of James Dean again. Just to relate to someone with a smaller body of work. Fact is, he was on a hit TV show that a lot of people enjoyed, not mentioning him would have have seen an even bigger uproar of criticism.

No need for a tribute to Cory; an acknowledgement of his death would have sufficed. His accomplishments were minor.

I guess anyone with a drug problem is scum of the earth and shouldn’t be honour? Jack Klugman was a great actor. He might have helped with the entertainment in the early days but, Cory did the same thing in the present. If the Emmy’s could honour everyone than they would but, they can’t. Cory might have not have won any Emmys but, he was loved and has touched many young lives. He was a great actor and a nice guy. He was also involved in many charities. A lot of people relates to him. Just because he had a drug problem doesn’t mean he should be kicked while down. Should they just ignore him? Jack Klugman said that the Emmy is insulting his dad. Well, has he thought how his words has insulted Cory’s family, friends and fans?

This was a self-inflicted death; I agree that an acknowledgement of his death would suffice.

Jack Klugman, like his ODD COUPLE co-star Tony Randall, was a great actor.
