Jem and The Holograms gets big screen reboot

For those who grew up in the ’80s, the cartoon Jem and the Holograms probably brings back fond memories. Today it was announced that the hit show is going to be introduced to a whole new audience by being made into a live action movie. For those unfamiliar with the show, here’s a quick synopsis: Jerrica Benton inherits Starlight Music from her father after he passes away. She soon discovers that he left behind a super computer named Synergy that creates real life holograms. Using Synergy, Jerrica becomes pop star Jem and forms a band called Jem and The Holograms, keeping her secret from her boyfriend Rio as well as the rest of the world. In addition, she and the rest of The Holograms must put up with the antics of rival band The Misfits and their evil manager Eric Raymond, who is bent on stealing Starlight Music and ruining Jem’s career.

The live action reboot is set to be directed by Jon M.Chu who also directed ’80s cartoon-turned-live action G.I Joe: Retaliation. This version will focus on the social media age and being true to who you are. While it’s too early to speculate, this could be a great way to introduce a whole new generation to the magic and “truly outrageous” story of Jem and The Holograms. ~Tarah Bleier
