Jennifer Hudson has signed on to play Nelson Mandela‘s controversial ex-wife in the new film Winnie, based on the biography Winnie Mandela: A Life, according to Variety. As a mother and wife, Winnie supported her husband during his activist years, and was imprisoned for protesting for his freedom and against apartheid. Her image began to tarnish after she gave a speech that seemed to advocate violence and her involvement in the kidnapping and murder of a 14-year-old informant was revealed. This is a golden role for Hudson, who says she is honored to have been chosen for such a project. Filming will begin May 30 in South Africa.
