Jian Ghomeshi surrenders to Toronto police – update

Jian Ghomeshi was taken into police custody this morning in connection to recent allegations of sexual assault. The former CBC host faces five charges, including four counts of sexual assault and one count of “overcoming resistance – choking,” according to a police news release. Allegations about Ghomeshi’s history of sexual abuse hit mainstream news after he was abruptly fired from CBC in late October. Since then, several women and one man have stepped forward to report instances of sexual assault, going back to his university days. News of the charges comes just one day after Ghomeshi dropped his $55 million lawsuit against CBC and was ordered to pay $18,000 for the broadcaster’s legal fees. Ghomeshi is scheduled to appear at Toronto’s College Park courthouse at 2 p.m. this afternoon. ~Kelly Townsend

Update: Ghomeshi appeared before a judge at 12:45 p.m. Bail has been set at $100,000; he has surrendered his passport and is required to live with his mother, who attended the hearing.
