Joan Rivers compares Costco to Nazi Germany

By Tribute on August 9, 2012 | 27 Comments

Police were called to a Costco store in Burbank, California yesterday when comedian and actress Joan Rivers handcuffed herself to a customer’s shopping cart and loudly protested against the chain. Why is she protesting? Because the store is refusing to sell her new book – I Hate Everything… Starting With Me. Apparently Costco banned the book due to a few inappropriate jokes on the back cover. While handcuffing herself to the shopping cart, Rivers was yelling through a megaphone telling people to buy her book and saying, “Costco should not be like Nazi Germany, next thing they’ll be burning the Bible!” A store manager was obviously displeased with her behavior, repeatedly asking her to leave, later calling the police, while she replied, “I know you’re trying to throw me out of your store but this is bigger than both of us.” Customers seemed thoroughly entertained by the scene and even the police officials couldn’t help but laugh. Good marketing stunt Miss Rivers! ~Stacy Raivich

She’s pretty funny. She’ll do anything for attention.

    Joan,

STFU!!! You’ve had so many face lifts that at least one of them snapped back and destroyed your brain.

Joan its not the Ed Sullivan days anymore and you’re not a young comedienne looking for your big break… you are an old bag and need to retire from the biz. Your face is grotesque and needs a break from the slice and dice and your outrageous behaviour is not funny. We are laughing at you, not with you. Fade out.

Why is she so upset that Costco banned her book? Maybe if she wasnt so inapporpriate she wouldnt have this problem…

even with this publicity stunt, i doubt it’ll do much for her or her career. not that she has much of a career to begin with. people only know her for her plastic surgery.

HA! Joan Rivers is still pretty funny. If you want to hate on stirring up controversy when you should’ve already left the business…head on over to one of the countless Madonna articles. At least Joan tends to keep the majority of her clothes on.

When your career is in the dump I guess you have to do something for attention.

Too much botox made its way to her brain!

I have to side with Costco on this one. Unfortunately Costco does not have an ‘adult’ book section (at least this is my experience in Canada) and there are quite a few children in there reading the look and looking around. If she wanted the book to be sold in more stores, she should have been thinking about what is on the cover of her book. I’m quite sure that a Kathy Griffin book would not be sold in Costco…. and I’m sure she’s fine with that, if someone is interested in buying her book they will find a way.

Saying that Costco should not be like Nazi Germany is going a bit too far and this will do nothing for her career. If you choose to be disgusting on the outside of a book, expect that it will not get sold in a family friendly store.

Not everyone can shop at Costco, it’s only for the privileged so they can stuff themselves.

I have a lot of respect for Miss Joan Rivers. She will always be a Super entainer to me. I just wished I met her many years ago and kissed her hand etc.. I stand right up for Joan and I will always be in her corner if she ever needs my help in any way, I will her her all the way !

    Joan,
Old out of date ex-comic. She is an embarrassment to the world. She is no longer funny or relevant. Costco did the right thing and ban the whinny Joan. The rant she displayed at Costco offended me and every other respectable person out there.
Amanda get a life, Costco doesn’t allow you in because you whine as much as Joan.

  13. Linda • August 9, 2012 @ 1:11 PM

I agree with Joan. Rivers is not funny, she is rude.

  14. Linda • August 9, 2012 @ 1:12 PM

Excuse me, I meant to say that I agree with Mike. Joan is not funny…she is extremely rude.

  15. Candace • August 9, 2012 @ 1:33 PM

@ Linda – No, no, you’re first comment works too lol Joan knows very well she’s rude.

  16. mysterious • August 9, 2012 @ 1:49 PM

Duct tape would work on her.

  17. em • August 9, 2012 @ 2:34 PM

she is comparing her crappy book (filled with inapropriate content), to the Bible?????? she is sick!

  18. Sandra • August 9, 2012 @ 3:41 PM

I love Joan Rivers and think she is super witty.
But this stunt just made her look desperate.

  19. My opinion • August 9, 2012 @ 3:52 PM

Costco has the right to decide what they wish to sell or not, whether its her book or some toilette paper.

This is so clearly a stunt by Joan to get free publicity. So tacky.

  20. C-Dub • August 9, 2012 @ 5:17 PM

Comparing Costco to Nazi, just because they choce to discriminate what products they sell? Her book is not even close tot he same level as the bible. It’s a product plain and simple. And they chose not to sell it. If she is saying they are censoring like Nazi Germany, then she might want to look at the book section at costco. It’s not a library! They have a very limited selection and for that mater the books are there only for a limited selling period.

The plastics in her body are messing with her mind.

  21. Cheryl • August 9, 2012 @ 7:28 PM

Am I the only one that thinks Costco was in on it from the very beginning? Great stunt though, international coverage for Costco, Joan Rivers and her book.

  22. mitch • August 9, 2012 @ 10:20 PM

WOW!!!…I didnt know the Nazis had long lines, bad service and closed early.

  23. mitch • August 9, 2012 @ 10:20 PM

    …..and no express line.

  24. Jack • August 10, 2012 @ 9:14 AM

No,the Nazi’s did have massive lines you moron…putting Costco in that same category, even as a joke, shows how intelligent and idiotic you are

  25. Yvonne • August 10, 2012 @ 12:08 PM

I lost all respect for Joan Rivers when she was on The Apprentice. She was whinney and childish then, and it appears that she has not “grown up”

  26. Tudor • August 10, 2012 @ 2:59 PM

I actually don’t think she’s funny at all. She’s distasteful, old and her jokes aren’t funny anymore. How dare does she compare a commercial chain to Nazi Germany. She has no clue what happened there? Either way, White Trash!!! her and her whole family. Enough said!

  27. RuthE • August 11, 2012 @ 9:37 AM

I believe Joan Rivers’ book is on the New York Times best-selling list and she has her own ‘Fashion Police’ show on TV every Friday night so she is not exactly starving! I noticed 50 Shades of Grey at Costco on the table right beside the children’s books so I can assure you these ‘adult books’ will not entice youngsters! If you don’t like her humour, then don’t listen to her! If you don’t like her choice of plastic surgery, then don’t watch her! Also, take a look in the mirror sometimes – are you working as hard as she is at a career after all these years? She’s still around, isn’t she???
