Jodelle Ferland as Bree in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Vampires and supernatural creatures are all the rage these days, and for Canadian actress Jodelle Ferland, diving in head first as newborn vampire Bree in the highly anticipated The Twilight Saga: Eclipse—starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner—was a dream role she couldn’t resist sinking her teeth into. With many roles in film, television and commercials under her belt, 15-year-old Jodelle already has quite an impressive resumé. But it’s with her next role as Bree, in Eclipse, that the young British Columbia star is gaining fame.

In Eclipse, Ferland’s character, Bree, is turned into a vampire by Victoria, who is amassing a vampire army to seek revenge on Bella, Edward and the Cullens. Not much is said about Bree, but fans will be excited to know that author Stephenie Meyer is releasing a book called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella.

Ferland recently sat down with Tribute’s Toni-Marie Ippolito to talk about being part of the Twilight phenomenon and whether she’s on Team Edward or Team Jacob!

What’s it been like for you so far since joining the Twilight Saga? I’m sure you’re gaining more fans!
Ferland: On my first day on set, I couldn’t believe that I was there. I am getting noticed more. It’s kind of funny but I like it. It’s not so bad when a few people recognize you. But I wouldn’t want to be like poor Robert Pattinson! He can’t do much without someone recognizing him.

You’re from British Columbia where the movie was filmed. What was it like shooting at home?
It was great. I didn’t have to go anywhere! I could go home and then go straight to the set and it was easy. A lot of times I have to go away for months to film something but it was great to get the chance to be at home.

Were you also a fan of the books?
Not when they first came out.  But after the first movie came out and everyone got really excited about it, I thought, “Oh I guess I should see what this is all about!” I read the books and I loved them and I saw the movie, so I was a big fan before I got the role of Bree. My favorite book is Breaking Dawn.

How did you get the part of Bree? Millions of actors would have killed to have this part!
I got it just like I got any other role. I auditioned and then I got a callback saying that I got it, and I was so excited!

Stephenie Meyer wrote a novella based on Bree, have you read it?
Yes, I actually got to read it before I filmed Eclipse so I could get the back story on Bree and help me get into character. It definitely helped because there’s not that much about Bree Tanner in Eclipse, what happened to her or how she ended up that way so it was great to have a back story.

You got to read it before its release. Were you sworn to secrecy?
I had to actually to read it while I was on set. I couldn’t have a copy because they had to be careful. I had to sit in a trailer with somebody there with me at all times.

Perhaps you should have your own spin-off movie!
Absolutely! I would love that.

What’s it like playing a vampire? Is it fun to be bad?
It’s so fun to be bad. The best part was wearing the eyes. I loved the red contacts. The only bummer is that we didn’t get to wear fangs!

What was it like on set? Did you bond with anyone?
It definitely helped that I knew Kristen before because I had already worked with her (on The Messengers). When I got there on the first day everyone made me feel really welcome. I was at first a little worried about it because they had all worked together on two movies and knew each other really well and I was the newcomer. But there were no problems so everyone was super nice to me.

So, are you Team Edward or Team Jacob?
I think I’m Team Edward. I think the reason I like Edward better is because in the first book it’s Edward that falls in love with Bella first. Jacob sort of comes after so I bet if Jacob fell in love with Bella first I would be Team Jacob.

She was in the book breaking dawn, she is the only surviving New born vampire from the fight with the cullens and wolves. The cullens wanted to induct her into there family, help her become like them. But the members of the voltire who came decide against it, and kill her in front of the cullens.because they do not want the cullens to grow stronger in numbers. She is only in one chapter of the book.
