John Travolta blackmailed!

John TravoltaJohn Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, who are still grieving over the death of their 16-year-old son Jett, are now the victims of an extortion plot. According to the Daily Mail, Travolta was contacted by two men who demanded “millions of dollars” in exchange for not selling a photograph of his dying son to the media. The Tribune, a Bahamas-based newspaper, reported Monday that police are questioning two people, “one believed to be a local politician.” Travolta’s attorneys released a statement that read: “Regretably in a time of such terrible grief there are often a few individuals who attempt to make false claims in hopes of making millions of dollars. We will never let that happen.” The statement also said that the Travoltas have “the utmost confidence in the Bahamian police and government” as it looks into the reported extortion attempt.

“Regrettably, in a time of such terrible grief, there are often a few individuals who attempt to make false claims in hopes of making millions of dollars. We will never let that happen.”

Hmmm…do you think the Travolta’s will write everyone a nice letter asking them to stop making false accusations/claims?

  2. M • January 22, 2009 @ 11:17 AM

    Question becomes…are they really false?

  3. jane • January 22, 2009 @ 1:16 PM

Maybe I’m dense, but how is a photograph a claim in any way?

  4. Idunno • January 22, 2009 @ 1:22 PM

Maybe their claim to have a photograph is false.

  5. r0ckst4r • January 22, 2009 @ 1:28 PM

It’s not the photograph that’s the claim. These 2 men are claiming that they have a photograph of Jett dying in the ambulance. One of the guys is a paramedic and was in the back of ambulance when Jett was taken to the hospital. He obviously took a photo with his cell phone (because I can’t imagine he’d just have a camera laying around) and now these men want hundreds of millions of dollars from the Travolta’s. These guys need to go to jail for a long time. This is a disgusting thing to do to a family who’s still recovering from the death of their son. g

People like this give scum a bad name. There the kind of people you could commit war-crimes against and wouldn’t feel bad after.

  10. demigod • January 23, 2009 @ 2:27 AM

What would be just as callous is the one paying for the pics and releasing them under such circumstances.

  11. deb • January 23, 2009 @ 8:23 AM

there really is no words to describe these type of extortionists- oh wait – i can think of a few- disgusting opportunists who are using a devasting tragedy for financial gain. A magazine or newspaper that buys and prints this photo is on the same level as these dirtbag bottom-feeding pond scum.

  12. denise • January 23, 2009 @ 9:48 AM

I think this is disgusting to do that to anyone, you wouldn’t want this to happen to you or someone you loved. They wouldn’t even think of doing this if JT wasn’t so popular, For goodness sake let the family greive in peace like the rest of us would.

the price these people pay for fame is sometimes way too high

I am not at all surprised some heartless people would succumb to this extortion attempt, just disgusted

the Travolta family, same as anyone, deserves to grieve in peace, yes.

  14. Aline Tombs • January 23, 2009 @ 10:43 AM

Some people have no conscience! How can anyone do such a thing? Unfortunately, popularity brings the rats out of the woodwork! My thoughts are with the Travolta family who seems to be such a fine, down to earth people.

  15. Bev • January 23, 2009 @ 10:57 AM

If they had a photo why go to John and Kelley, those smut magazines would pay them a fortune and not release their name.

  16. Brianna Randall • January 23, 2009 @ 11:29 AM

Isn’t there anything sacred anymore? The Travoltas are grieving. They lost their beloved son Jett so can’t people allow them the dignity of grieving in peace? I don’t care if anybody has pictures of Jett dying in the ambulance, what does that change? What does it prove in any case other than he didn’t die from the seizure in the bathroom like mentioned on the news but in the ambulance, and that changes what? What are those scumbags trying to prove? In any case their claim sounds like such a phoney one as who would in an ambulance carry a camera. Paramedics are not there to take pictures but to try and keep the patients alive and comfortable till they reach the ER.

  20. Clare • January 23, 2009 @ 12:56 PM

Why can’t they let the Travolta’s grieve in peace. I can’t even imagine the pain they are going through losing a child. It is a sick world we live in.

It scares me how selfish our world has become and what it might turn into.

Did you skip your history classes?
The world has always ALWAYS been a selfish scary place. People have always done sick things for their own personal gain.
Asking for a few million dollars for some pictures is pretty lame compaired to flying a few planes full of innocent people into buildings….

  23. mandee • January 23, 2009 @ 1:30 PM

i do agree that these people are sick. but why make an article about it so the whole world knows? thats just giving these people fame, even though no one knows who they are. some things should be left out of the news, and this is one of them. i feel bad that while grieving for their son, they now have to deal with idiots who think they should get a cut of the money john and kelly WORKED to get. seriously, if you dont think youre making enough money at YOUR job, try acting. if paris can do it, who cant?

  24. Carmie • January 23, 2009 @ 1:34 PM

    Unbelievable…how selfish and despicable!!!
Let this honest and loving family grieve in peace..I couldn’t agree more with Deb any magazine or newspaper or media that would print or show this picture puts them in the same level as these low-life scumbags…let’s hope they have some decency..not to stoop at same level but then they are the worse ones…

  25. jacquie • January 23, 2009 @ 1:48 PM

Stories like this should be ignored and no space given to it. Let the authorities follow through and the very sick in the head culprit(s) be punished…..period. Whoever was in the ambulance will be known …..that is the first sep.
My sympathy and prayers goes to the parents

  26. Jo-Anne. • January 23, 2009 @ 1:54 PM

I disagree, mandee. I believe the news should report the (alleged) crimes, news is news, regardless of the offensiveness attached to a crime such as this. Many crimes are hard to stomach but the public has a right to hear about it.

But I do agree with you, to a point, if you feel you are not making enough money at your job, try something else. Or try two jobs.

Monique, yes the world has always been a scary place, and obviously this crime in no way compares to the severity of 911, I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.

But on the brighter side, the world has always been a beautiful place and I think it important to accentuate the positive too. Yes, bad things happen, and always will, but appreciate the good as well. The Travoltas, I am sure have a lot of great memories to reflect on, John himself made very uplifting comments after his son’s death and I’m confident they are handling everything that comes their way, including this, and it won’t damage their spirit.

I think there is more to this story than what we are reading. I think these blackmailers are trying to get John Travolta to admit that his son was autistic and that he had been taken off of his seizure medication. One aricle said that he was taken off of his medication because it was no longer working. Another article said that he was taken off the medication because of possible long-term side effects. There are numerous medications for seizures so if one wasn’t working another one or a coctail (comination of meications) should have been used. scientology says they tell their members to see docotors and take medications but several articles written by ex-scientologists says how thery were ordered to get aoof all medications, even if it was for a life threatening disease, because Scientology could cure anything.Plus there is the fact that this child was knowlingly not on any seizure medication, and was not checked on for several hours. Doesn’t there seem to be some kind of neglect here? I think so!

  30. Paula • January 23, 2009 @ 2:29 PM

Sad. Very sad. Let them grieve in peace. Hang the bastards.

  31. mandee • January 23, 2009 @ 2:44 PM

i do agree that most news should be posted for everyone. but in this case, i do not feel anyone needed to know. did it change anything for anybody who read this? other than sympathies for john and kelly, it didnt really accomplish or change anything. its different if it effects EVERYONE (such as 9/11) but this doesnt effect anyone except the travoltas, and i think its about time they got the privacy they deserve in a time like this.

To loose a child is the wost kind of pain, then to have to endure being blackmailed, is ubelievable. John Travolta and Kelly Preston may be movie stars, but first and formost they are people like everyone else, and they are parents, who now have to deal with a terrible loss.It would be nice if people would learn to seperate money from happiness,Im sure John and Kelly would give anything to have thier son back, I know if it were one of my children I would.God Bless to John and Kelly and their families. Carol from Canada

  35. Greg • January 23, 2009 @ 6:36 PM

How can 2 people who are supposed to represent Justice and Medical Assistance stoop so low as to try an extort someone who’s child was just lost? I am absolutely disgusted at their attempt to make a quick buck…or million bucks in this case. This same Paramedic broke his oath by speaking to the press about the patient he was in care of the day Jett was brought to the hospital, and I understand a Judge is the other person involved. Let poor Jett rest in peace and his family get over their grieving. Nobody would want the same thing to happen to them. That is why I am completely against the paparazzi digging into celebrity lives and ANYONE trying to extort money from someone who has money. THIS IS AGAINST THE LAW PEOPLE!
My heart goes out to John, Kelly and their daughter for having to live through the stress of their son’s/brother’s death all over again thanks to these 2 bastards.

    Interesting little jab there, Jo.
Anyway, I agree with what people are saying, the jerk who took the photo does give scum a bad name. I would imagine he’s e-mailed it to himself, probably several different e-mail addresses, so even if they did pay him, he could still end up selling it later.

  41. Nancy • January 24, 2009 @ 4:22 PM

Pam Bevin and Marla Murphy forgot to put their street names and #’s on their posts…..isn’t this the kind of thing that we teach our children NOT to do? You wouldn’t be hard for someone to find even without the street names and #’s ladies, just to let you know.

  42. Ash • January 24, 2009 @ 4:44 PM

Lets make money of someone’s death. The family is grieving they’ll do anything right now. Sounds good to me!
    That’s so low!

  43. tributegirl • January 24, 2009 @ 6:23 PM

That’s what I was thinking, Nancy, I wonder why these people all of a sudden started putting their town, province and country on their posts?

  44. Jo-Anne. • January 25, 2009 @ 10:09 PM

I believe this is a Canadian website, so we are all from Canada, but heartfelt comments from all those expressing compassion for the Travolta Family, I’m right there with you…

  45. Patricia • January 26, 2009 @ 12:03 AM

To be a celebrity in this day and age is horrible, between the paparrazzi and now extortionists threatening John and Kelly at the absolute worst time in their lives disgusts me and those people when found should be penalized to the max. 40 yrs in prison should do it! My heart goes out to John Kelly and their daughter and all the extended family, I hope it all comes to a swift end and they can get on with the grieving process as they should and try to get back to as normal a life one can have after the loss of a beloved child. God bless you John and Kelly, be strong.

World-wide web = anyone, from any country can post and read comments on this website.

  47. Diana • January 26, 2009 @ 10:04 AM

My sympathy to the Travolta family. May they find the love and strength to get them through this.

My sympathy also to those who seem fatally convinced that the world is “a sewer” naturally filled with this kind of heartless people…. May you someday remember that the world is still filled with people who are noble, honest and kind.

If looking into the mirror can still remind you of this fact… then not all hope is lost and there’s no room for fatal cynicism.

  48. Jo-Anne. • January 26, 2009 @ 10:15 AM

very good comments, Diana, why not accentuate the positive as well? We are all so well aware of the problems all over this world, but yes, there is so much to be thankful for, I agree, and dwelling only on the issues and drowning in cynicism is not my choice.

Also, I am sure anyone can comment on this site, I would be interested to know if there are any commentators other than Canadian? Anyone here from a country other than Canada?
