Johnny Depp: Disney hated “gay” Jack Sparrow

By Alexandra Heilbron on December 2, 2010 | 19 Comments

In an interview that will appear in the January issue of Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp says Disney “couldn’t stand” his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He tells the interviewer, rocker Patti Smith, that one Disney executive even asked him if Captain Jack was gay. He replied, “All of my characters are gay,” and claims his answer “really made her nervous.” Ironically, the portrayal earned Depp his first Academy Award nomination, as well as a number of awards including one from the Screen Actors Guild for “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.” Depp recently completed work on a fourth Pirates movie entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which will arrive in theaters May 20, 2011.

Um…did you mean “Curse of the Black Pearl”?

Haha I noticed that too when I was reading

It seems to me they made it quite clear he WASN’T gay with obvious implied womanizing… Unless he’s supposed to be in the closet 🙂

Um he was continuously drunk, I thought…not gay. Plus he’s an iconic character now so eat your words Disney.
And didn’t some Disney reps, like a lot of women out there, immediately swooned over Depp in that character? From all the articles I read, it seems nobody really cared for Bloom, they were all over Depp! And didn’t the test audiences react the same about the character?? not gay, but a drunk cleaver womanizer.

Ok I only saw Sparrow as being drunk, nothing about him was gay.
    Disney seriously grow up!

I agree he was drunk not gay and definitely a womanizer. I guess even Disney has it’s homophobes though.

I never thought Jack Sparrow was gay. Doesn’t he secretly have a thing for Elizabeth?

Sure he was just playing a drunkard, but I thought he showed us a few, slightly efeminant behaviours, like the way he played with his beard. He just had some unique mannerisms that I took more as feminine, than masculine, which made it even more funny! But for sure he was supposed to be a “masculine”-type character, cause he always showed an interest with Elizabeth, even to the point of implying that if Bloom didn’t want her, He would! It was almost a little ‘game’ being played between them. It added some “spice” to the movie!

Gay or not, who cares; the guy is a great actor in my mind.

I never thought Captain Jack was gay, just really eccentric. That’s really funny what he answered though. “All my characters are gay.” LOL, anyone with a sense of humour would have realized he was joking.

Drunkard, witty, mischievous, immature, scoundrel, womanizer, unkempt, thief, awkward; BUT NOT GAY!! I am so glad he was not the violent, sadistic Pirate! Perhaps that was the Disney’s Execs’ definition of macho? Sad really. LOVE Jack Sparrow!

To me he acted great(no wonder he was nominated for an Academy Award) but at the same time it seemed like he was a bit drunk, which got a bit annoying but that’s the character he played. I will definitely go see it again. The last sequel was a bit boring, but I think the next one will be good. If it isn’t, I won’t be going to another one.

All of my characters are gay ahahahaha. i love johnny. 😀

Stop nit picking. Then we might as well not even watch the Pirates of the Carribean series. He was drunk, no akward illusions of gayness towards anyone. Never saw that. So what if Johnny Depp says “all my Characters are gay”. His kids dont think that. His kids have said they loved all of the Pirates of the Carribean Movies. I have watched many of his other movies that he has been in and there is no gayness in them. Looking forward to seeing the last of Captain Jack Sparrow very soon.

ice of Disney to be worried that they might be making a movie with a gay pirate, but could care less about the overt sexualization they market to children. Although if all his characters are gay, it’s going to make for some fun rewatchings of his movies with this new context, lol.

“…I guess even Disney has its homophobes though…”

    they’re ALL homophobes.

Name ONE movie/TV show of Disney that has a gay person. Or a gay person portrayed as positive.

Disney is owned by the Baptists, and in their version of the bible Jesus doesn’t like gays.

Oh, and I’d have given all my tens of dollars to be a fly on the wall when he told the Disnatrons that ”all his characters were gay”. Brilliant!

They would not have been the same movies without Depp’s unique and wonderful spin on the character of Captain Jack Sparrow! This is just another reason why I adore & LOVE Johnny! And looking forward to the next Pirates.xo.

I think the term we’re looking for here is “moderately metrosexual”.

The executives at Disney are morons just like any other executives. They should all be FIRED!!!!
