Johnny Depp is almost blind

Johnny Depp Johnny Depp has revealed he is almost completely blind in one eye. The Lone Ranger star, who is rarely photographed without a pair of tinted glasses, claims he has been "basically blind as a bat" in his left eye since birth and the problem is impossible to correct. The 50-year-old actor, who is also near-sighted in his right eye, told the July issue of Rolling Stone magazine that all of his glasses are prescription and he relies heavily on them. He explained: "Everything is just very, very blurry. I've never had proper vision." The Pirates of the Caribbean star, who has two children, Lily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11, with his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, said he can only see a few inches from his face if he is playing a character that does not wear glasses or sunglasses. Meanwhile, the actor, who is now dating actress Amber Heard, also revealed that he thinks about retiring from Hollywood "every day," but is unlikely to do so in the near future. He said: "I think while I've got the opportunity and the desire and the creative spark to do the things that I can do right now, I should do them. And then, at a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life. Really living life. And going somewhere where you don't have to be on the run, or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel. At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realize that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive." But he added: "I don't know if I can relax. Relax, I can't do. My brain, on idle, is a bad thing. I just get weird. I mean, not weird. I get, I get antsy."

Johnny can come spend his time with me anytime he wants!! I can be his guide around town. It’s unusual in the modern age of medicine to not be able to correct his eye sight! I just had mine corrected last year, and I love not wearing glasses any longer!

stage fighting plus near blindness that sounds like very not fun times

I think he should get all the acting in and after he’s truly bored, sit back and enjoy his bounty! Life is too short to not do what you enjoy and if you can afford it, LIVE IT! Love his movies and always thought he worked too hard, but mighty glad he does. 😉

Wow, the talent of this man is amazing. To do the acting he does, bringing the characters to life, and now knowing he is doing it mostly blind is…just amazing. I, too, am extremely near sighted in both eyes but contacts, and now reading glasses, make it so I can see. Blessing to you Johnny! You are an awesome man.

Johnny you are so talented and amazing, I love all your movies and how you get into your characters. I certainly do not look like you are 50, you age well <3 Love you always. So sorry to hear about your eye though.

Tragic. My family comes genetically charged with horrible eye diseases. Blah. I too, like J.D, where tinted glasses indoors and out – 24/7. At least I’m suppose to …I should get around to filling that RX. My vision doctor is the most amazing amazingly amazing doctor who specializes in vision therapy. I’m sure you’ve checked a ton of resources. But not until a year ago did I learn that I could retrain my brain to correct a focusing problem with my eyes? Also, granting me the ability to read more concise and faster. Who knew 🙂 Seek and you shall find xoxo

While it would be a shame to see him leave movies, it’s an even bigger shame that the man feels that he has to work (in movies) to have somewhere near a normal life. He is at an age now that he has well deserved to leave movies behind, and should be able to travel the world and enjoy the fruits of his labor as Donna said. Sad part is, he has traveled the world so much in making his movies, I can understand how it would not hold the same thrill and excitement that it would hold for us lesser mortals. Not to mention, that even if he left movies for 15 years, he still would not be able to go anywhere and not be recognized. Unless he got plastic surgery, and who would willingly want Johnny Depp to get plastic surgery? I say (as a straight man) that Johnny is a very handsome man. Handsome to a level that 99.9% of men will never enjoy if we lived 100 lifetimes. If the man was blessed by Karma to the degree he has been, I say let him enjoy it. Just sad that it now means a life of solitude and lack of excitement because he has reached a level most people couldn’t even dream of, ergo everything has became stale to him. Come to think of it, sounds like more of a curse than a blessing.

I have always been a Johnny Depp fan. I have all his movies except the new one (The Lone Ranger) but as soon as it is available I will get it too.I love him most in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I think he is both sexy and funny in those movies. I have been a fan of his since way back when he played in the TV series “21 Jump Street”. He also has always loved to play music and when he was younger he did that alot. I think the movies he picks to act in are something that shows alot about the kind of person he is because Johnny will not do a movie that shows perversion, lack of dignity, or anything that he feels that his fans would find distasteful. He has turned down movie offers of millions of dollars even, but he said it’s not about the money that he makes his movies, he does it for his fans. He says his fans pay alot of money to see him in movies so if he feels that a movie is not worth it regardless how much money he is turning down he won’t act in it. If you notice alot of his movies are Disney movies, because they are family oriented movies so the whole family can enjoy watching them together. Johnny has always been a very oriented and very dedicated man and it is easy to tell because he was with his ex-girlfriend for several years and has 2 children who he is very dedicated to, which is another reason he is picky about his movies because his children. He wants to be a good role model for his children and he has done very well so far.Johnny Depp is and always will be my favorite actor. As for his vision problem, it is very sad that he has that problem with his eye, but as good as his acting is in his movies it is not noticeable at all. Even as much as I love his movies, I agree though that pretty soon he should go ahead and retire from acting and just relax and enjoy life. He would then be able to travel with his children while they are still young, and his new girlfriend and not have to worry about anything but having fun with his family. Johnny Depp you are the best and if you do decide to leave I will miss you but I wish you the best always! Love You Always From Your Number 1 Fan!

Not fun not seeing well and people don’t understand the clumsiness but it’s better than being totally blind. Humans have a great ability to adapt.

I’m shocked to find out that Depp is almost blind, you would never know it. My best friend has the same problem and had it since she was born. So eye problems cannot be corrected. It must be really hard for him to play parts without his glasses and I am sure that contacts are not an option at this point. I have bad eye sight as well. I began wearing bi-focals in high school (the ones without the lines thank God) and have to get them changed about every 6 months. My lenses have to be tinted or have the transitions and anti-glare and uv and all. And only come in the ultra light category otherwise they would not even fit in a frame. They run me about 800 every 6 months, and that is just for the lenses and not the frames. Wish I had vision coverage. But Kudos to Depp for not letting it stop him from living his life!!!! My best friend manages with 5% vision in 1 eye only with 2 kids, is a single mom, and against my wishes and better judgement still drives. But she has been that way since birth. Although when she was younger it was 20% in 1 eye, it has gotten worse and there is no treatment, she’s blind in the other.

I have a 12 year old daughter that has the exact same problem with her vision. She has been in glasses since she was 2 and even sleeps and showers with them on, simply because she can’t see. I plan on showing her this article so that she can see there are no limits to what she can do. I’m sure you will be an inspiration to my oldest Johnny Depp, she and the rest of our family love your movies, thank you for your dedication.

So that explains his baby mama. Just kidding, I love you Johnny and every single movie and t.v. show you have ever done. I wish only love and happiness for you and the ones you love.

Reaching the pinnacle of what you do, and achieving great fame, are two completely different things. Johnny, no doubt, got a great start in life, in general, and in his career, BECAUSE OF his ‘looks’. You can look at any career, and those at the top got there, in part, due to their looks. It’s a sad fact, but for the rest of us we either must be near-perfect in what we do, and for a LONG TIME, in order to progress in our fields, or forget about it. I also think it’s ridiculous that doctors, teachers, fire fighters, police, and other people that do things in real life ‘that matter’, aren’t paid anywhere near these fakes and frauds we called actors and actresses. Wake up people. Having said that, I’m sure Johnny, Robert DiNiro and others at the top of Hollywood HAVE worked hard to get where they are …. they just aren’t as valuable to this world as folks would like to believe.

    Mr. Depp,
You are a WONDERFUL ACTOR. I especially liked the Hunter Thompson films. He deserved your tribute to him. Too bad you can’t see perfectly a reflection of yourself because you really are beautiful. I had a framed large poster of you strapped into my passenger seat forever. I suppose that is cradle raiding because I am 61, am NOT blind and don’t look into mirrors.
Anyway, do what you want like – write a book about the history of the area that you live in, sew a quilt with hankies, show dogs and if a great character comes up like the Rabbitt in “Alice in Wonderland” that you like – do it!
Don’t give up anything that you like. You have made yourself a success and people will remember your name forever (if the earth lasts longer) so what else is there? Just be happy and come live with me. I will make my husband live in the garage.

I have to be truly amazed with all that he has done with his acting and have this knowledge just come out so publically now. This is a big credit to his skills, abilities, and his class. Many people would use this information as an excuse or a pitty party. He is ready to keep going! For now…

    Mr. Johnny Depp,

Thank you for showing others that you can have a major challenge before you and you do not have to give up!

It is something to be proud of.

  18. Sophie • October 10, 2013 @ 3:52 PM

I guess he got enough of the calm & quiet to get back to the craziness of Hollywood… I live & work in the latter & can’t WAIT to retire where I was born 47 years ago today, the French Riviera, where he lived for a few years & where things are quiet & relaxing except for 3 months of the year when tourists invade. At least now he knows there IS a place actors can live with freedom & not be bothered by paparazzi or regular people… Locals there are so used to actors that we don’t even LOOK at them! I’ll bet he’ll still retire there… Too bad about his relationship with Vanessa Paradis though. Most of France envisioned these 2 together forever…

  19. DONNA • November 17, 2013 @ 8:28 AM

my son has the same problem with his left eye.Never could fix does`nt affect the looks any though

  20. Trisha • November 26, 2013 @ 3:42 AM

I had no idea. I’m almost completely blind in my left eye since birth, too, and it’s not repairable either. Without my glasses I can only see about 6″ then everything starts to get blurry :o( I feel ya, bro!

  21. Steve Rowloff • December 14, 2013 @ 6:40 PM

John…I have incurable vision problems too…every eight weeks I get an injection in the left eyeball.
They say it’s macular degeneration. I have VA medical…it’s a 600 mile round trip for those shots.
I’d talk eyes with you if you want to…guitars too, bud.
Best wishes and Merry Christmas. Keep on rockin’.

  22. Marion • December 27, 2013 @ 9:15 PM

I get it my mom has a pinhole of vision in one eye only, I have been nearsighted from 2nd grade on,I am in public eye constantly and would love to evaporate however I know I would not be happy if I were to just hang daily and not give my talents to the public
    John I get you

  23. Daniel P. Trump • December 28, 2013 @ 5:20 PM

Its inspiring to us other blind bats that this man can do so much and be blind in one eye. I also can’t do anything with my glasses and corrective surgery won’t fix it. Little depressing since if a man with his resources can’t get his eyes fixed then I have no chance. Most likely he has a astigmatism like I do. Eye surgery won’t correct that.

  24. carol baker • December 28, 2013 @ 6:16 PM

@ Karen, not everybody can have corrective eye surgery. I like Johnny. Can’t see farther than a couple of inches. I to was born like this and there’s nothing any Dr can do to improve it. Even though I have had 2 surgeries when I was a child, nothing has improved!

  25. Rebecca Harmon • December 31, 2013 @ 6:56 AM

First off johnny I love you your Awsome funny and a brilliant actor . second how the hell are you fifty you dont look like it at all I mean come on your HOT! Thirdly last I hope I get a chance to met you one day your an amazing man for doing what you do.

  26. Tara • January 4, 2014 @ 11:51 AM

I think I may have the same problem as him because I can’t see out of my right eye very well at all because it is naturally smaller than my left eye however the pupil is still the same size causing the light to miss the retina at the back of my eye, this might be why he can’t get his eye fixed because I can’t either. I love his work btw and he is hot for an older guy, considering im only 17 haha XD

  27. Pamela • January 16, 2014 @ 12:55 PM

I can sympathise with Johnny. I am also short sighted and developed astigmatism when I was 18(the sight in my right eye is very blurry and corrective surgery has not helped for long), but I am not letting it get me down I am still doing my design courses despite these things. I am glad to hear that he want to continue acting as I would miss him dreadfully if he retired, he is so talented.

  28. Some One • January 23, 2014 @ 12:36 PM

Johnny did very great in Pirates of the Caribbean, like he was abosolutely the best actor that Hollywood could have got by a very long shot in every fashion!

  29. Gracie Logan • February 12, 2014 @ 7:59 AM

I am so sorry that you have this challenge/struggle in your life.I see every movie you make, have loved each one, think that you are just absolutely the best! When you have been on shows that you were interviewed on, i.e., The Actors’ Studio, you have such a wonderful way of expressing yourself. You are a wordsmith, and even your tone of voice is so wonderful and intelligent.I sense that underneath all the fame that you are shy. That just makes it all the more meaningful that you have made such an outstanding career out of acting and music. You seem to be so overflowing with creativity. And I thank you for all of it that I have gotten to experience and be thoroughly entertained by!I have told folks how wonderful Benny and Joon was, as well as Don Juan DeMarco, and Gilbert Grape, and others that somehow, they missed! Your range of expressing your emotions is so very real and seems so honest. I admire you and your talents very much and am a longtime fan(no kidding!)Good luck with your visual problems and with your lady. Your kids are very lucky! Take good care, you are loved for way more than your amazing looks!

  30. Aaron • February 19, 2014 @ 7:12 PM

O no! I hate this I grew up watching his movies. He should be able to fix it by now with the tech they say we have they should fix it:(

  31. Nonna • April 1, 2014 @ 12:47 AM

How did he manage to play fight on the pirates of the Caribbean? What if he hit the other person by accident?
But he is truly a looker. I love that mysterious look he has. It’s got sex appeal. Really hot. excuse me did I say that!

  32. Darrel • May 4, 2014 @ 9:20 AM

I once posed for a picture with Johnny Depp in Canada when I was on vacation, I did not know he was blind in one eye, oh gee sorry to hear about this, this is surprising as he is such a great actor

  33. Ariel • May 13, 2014 @ 12:33 PM

I wrote a pirate story for the movie industry…I asked for Johnny Depp to play a role in it…Now I have not been compensated or ackowledged for all the work I did. And now Johnny is sharing his life his love and his fortune and earnings with some other girl instead of me. I wish I were just dead.

  34. Charlene Debelo • May 15, 2014 @ 12:25 PM

I think Johnny Depp is the most interesting, smartest and one if the most beautiful people of all times. I love his creativity and I think it is terrible that he is almost blind in one eye. I love him and his work. I will be praying for you! I know our Lord can heal you, if you don’t believe than I can believe for the both of us!
